CLINTON, S.C. ? The Presbyterian College men's basketball team
nearly pulled off another overtime victory, but Andre Jones' three-point shot
with 16 seconds remaining enabled the visiting Winthrop Eagles to knock off the
Blue Hose 54-53 in overtime Saturday
evening.
The Blue Hose fall to 6-10 on the season and 3-2
in Big South play. The Eagles improve to 3-11 on the year and 2-3
in conference competition.
PC was led by Al'Lonzo Coleman's 20 points and nine rebounds. Chase Holmes also
netted double figures, recording 14 points and six boards. Travis Sligh pulled
down eight boards in the contest.
The Blue Hose, playing in their second consecutive overtime contest, tied the game
at 47-47 with nine seconds remaining when Coleman hit the second of two charity
tosses to knot the game. Then, PC's defense came to life as it forced Reggie
Middleton to miss a jumper with one second to go in the game, making the
contest go into an extra session.
The visitors jumped out to a two-point advantage in the overtime period with 4:32 to go on Charles Corbin's runner in the lane. The Blue Hose
tied it up on Coleman's lay-up with 3:14 to play. Twenty seconds
later, Corbin gave the Eagles the lead on another jumper, making the score
51-49.
Coleman the received the ball in the post, went up and was fouled by George
Valentine. After missing the first shot, Coleman drilled the second, pulling
the Blue Hose within one, 51-50.
Chase Holmes hit a charity toss at the 2:11 mark to knot the score
51-51. After a missed jumper by Andre Jones with 2:01 to go, Josh Johnson
grabbed the rebound for PC.
After working the ball around, Holmes fired up a three-point attempt that
missed, but Pierre Miller got the offensive board. Coleman eventually got
fouled and hit two free throws, giving the home team a 53-51 lead with 1:20 to play.
Neither team could score for the next minute as both had empty possessions.
After a 30-second timeout by Winthrop, the visitors worked
the ball around to Andre Jones in the corner, who fired up what turned out to
be the game-winning shot off a pass from Reggie Middleton.
As the Blue Hose attempted to get the ball up the court, Johnson turned the
ball over as Chris Malcom was able to record the steal. Trying to dribble out
the clock, he was fouled by Coleman, putting Malcom at the line.
Malcom missed the front end of the one-and-one, but PC was unable to get a shot
off, giving Winthrop the one-point win.
For the game, PC connected on just 13-of-39 attempts for a 33.3 percent clip
from the floor. The Eagles drained 22-of-53 shots for 41.5 percent. The Blue
Hose out-rebounded the visitors by eight, 35-27. The biggest difference in the
game was the turnover battle. PC committed 17 turnovers while Winthrop had 11.
The
Blue Hose return to action Monday evening at 7 p.m., when they travel to Lexington, Va., and take on
league-leading VMI in a critical Big South match-up.
