CLINTON, S.C. ? In
what is arguably the most exciting men's basketball game of the season thus
far, the Presbyterian College squad knocked off Liberty by a 67-66 score in double overtime in
front of 489 fans at the Templeton Center Monday evening.
The Blue Hose move to 6-9 on the season and 3-1 in Big South play while the
Flames drop to 10-6 on the year and 1-3 in conference competition.
PC was led by Pierre Miller's 22 points, 21 of which came from long distance.
Miller and Josh Johnson each played the entire way ? and Johnson netted 17
points while tying his career highs with five assists and three blocks. He also
pulled down six boards.
Al'Lonzo Coleman recorded a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13
rebounds, just one of which was off his career high.
With 28 seconds to go, Miller drained his seventh three-ball of the night,
putting the Blue Hose up one, 67-66. PC then played tight defense, keeping the
one-point advantage. After the Flames called a timeout with eight seconds to
go, Liberty worked the ball to rookie Seth
Curry, who fired up a three-pointer from 22 feet out, but Johnson swatted the
shot away to the corner, solidifying the win for PC.
Liberty took a three-point lead at the 2:54 mark in the second overtime as Curry
hit a jumper and was fouled on the play. He converted the charity toss for the
advantage. However, head coach Gregg Nibert's team quickly regrouped as Coleman
grabbed the offensive board and powered up the ball, drawing a foul on Brolin
Floyd.
Coleman hit both free throws, pulling the team within one. With 1:52 to go, Miller hit the second of two
foul shots, knotting the score at 64-64.
The Flames controlled nearly the next entire minute of play, getting three
offensive rebounds before Floyd put the squad up by two once he hit an inside
runner. A 30 second timeout ensued by the Blue Hose, setting up Miller with 28
ticks to go for what turned out to be the game-winning bucket.
Liberty's Anthony Smith hit a three-pointer
with 10 seconds to go in regulation, knotting the score at 51-51, and sending
the contest into the first overtime session. In the first extra period, the
teams battled back and forth as PC took the early one-point lead on a free
throw before Kyle Ohman hit a three-pointer, giving the visitors a two-point
lead, 54-52.
Miller's three put the home squad up by one with 2:23 to go. Neither team could score for
the next 1:53, but Tyler Baker made the second of two free throws to tie
the game at 55-55.
PC worked the ball around the perimeter before Johnson stopped and popped a
23-foot shot for a three-point advantage with six seconds to play. However, the
Flames dribbled up the court and Curry hit a three of his own, forcing the
second overtime.
For the game, PC connected on 24-of-61 shots for a 39.3 percent pace while Liberty canned 24-of-65 attempts for 36.9
percent shooting from the field. PC drilled 10-of-23 shots from downtown,
including four-of-seven in the overtime sessions.
The game was the first double overtime contest for PC since the 1992-93 season, when PC fell 86-80 to Lenoir-Rhyne.
