LEXINGTON, Va. - VMI scored an 80th minute
goal and added an insurance tally six minutes later to take the Keydets over
Presbyterian College, 2-0. The Big South
Conference opener went sour late as PC ruled much of the run of play. The Blue Hose fall to 3-6 on the season and
0-1 in the league while VMI improves to 3-6 on the season and 1-0 in Big South
play.
Both teams had plenty of chances throughout the match but
the breakthrough came in the 80th minute for VMI. Kacey Hall sent a long pass downfield from
the midline for Amanda Berrios. Berrios then fired a shot from just
outside of the box on the right side toward the far post, besting PC's keeper,
Abby Young, for the game's first goal.
The Blue Hose tried to answer in the next minute, when
Stephanie Aaron fired a shot that was saved by Keydet goalkeeper Heidi
Beemer. Instead, VMI doubled the margin in the 86th minute,
when Chrissy Beach popped a Simone Jimenez pass over a charging Young for her
third goal of the season.
"We are pleased with our effort tonight," said head coach Brian Purcell. "It was a very competitive game. The difference in the match was a little bit of quality in the VMI attack which we were lacking tonight."
Young went the distance for PC in goal, making four saves
and allowing both goals. The Keydet
tandem of Angela Redmond and Heidi Beemer each played half the match with
Redmond making four saves and Beemer stopping three shots.
The Keydets held advantages in shots (13-10), corner
kicks (6-5) and fouls (10-1) in the contest, while the Blue Hose held a slight
edge in shots on goal (7-6).
The loss is PC's first to the Keydets as PC had rolled in
both previous matches between the programs.
Tricia Bryan led the Blue Hose in shots while her and Aaron
each tallied two shots on goal to lead the category for PC.
The Blue Hose will now sail southbound on I-81 in preparation
for Sunday's matinee match against Radford.
The match begins at 2 p.m. from the Highlanders' Cupp Memorial Stadium.
