CLINTON, S.C. - The
Presbyterian College volleyball squad knocked off High Point 3-2 (26-24, 23-25,
34-32, 16-25, 15-10) in a crucial Big South Conference contest Saturday
afternoon behind an all-around solid effort by the team.
With the
win, the Blue Hose improves to 7-11 on the season and 2-2 in Big South Conference play. The
Panthers fall to 9-10 on the year and 0-4 against conference competition.
Leading the
way for Belshe's team was Lisa Shelley. Shelley amassed a double-double with a
match-high 26 kills to go along with 16 digs. Junior Amanda Kettles notched 16
kills and rookie Presley Mabrey added 15 kills.
Junior Kilee Ruppe dished out a match-high 59 assists while adding 13 digs for
a double-double. Defensively, Elizabeth Heineman recorded a match-best 22 digs.
Ashley Dunlap came off the bench to tally 15 digs and two aces.
Kettles stuffed six shots, including one solo. Mabrey and Shelley also had one
solo block each.
In the fifth set, PC started out by gaining the first two points behind a kill
from Mabrey and a block by Mabrey and Kettles. After HPU had a point, the Blue
Hose ran off five straight points for an insurmountable lead. During the run,
Shelley had a kill while Mabrey posted back-to-back aces. Shelley and Kettles
then added back-to-back kills for the 7-1 lead.
After a bad set gave PC its 14th point of the set, the visitors ran
off three straight points to close the gap to 14-10. However, after a wild
play, Heineman dug the ball and Ruppe tapped it over the net. The Panthers
could not play the ball, ending the match with the PC victory.
The Blue Hose jumped on top by winning the first set 26-24. PC jumped on top
3-0 but found itself in a tough battle as the teams played to a 20-20 tie after
the first 40 points. PC edged ahead, 24-22 on an attack error. That led to the
Panthers tying the set at 24 apiece. Allison Brown slammed home a kill and an
attack error by the visitors secured the first set for the Blue Hose.
After
dropping a tough second set 25-23, PC came out of the intermission very
determined. The Panthers went ahead early in the set 11-7, but head coach Chris
Belshe's team came back to knot the score at 23 apiece.
The Blue Hose misfired on their next attempt but evened the score on a service
error. PC then went up one, but could not finish the set at that point. The
teams battled back-and-forth until the Panthers took a 32-31 lead on an attack
error by PC. A service error by HPU gave the ball back to the Blue Hose. From
there, Shelley powered home a kill before Kettles' ace ended the set.
The Blue
Hose return to action Tuesday when they host UNC Asheville in a 7 p.m., contest.
