This was PC's second game on the road this season, and the
young team stunned the Furman crowd by taking a 13 point lead early in the
first half. After being tied 2-2 in the first minutes of the game, the Blue Hose began connecting from
beyond the arc. The team took a 13-point
lead after four huge three pointers made in the first 10 minutes of the half.
The lead was widened due to Ryan Hargrave's effort on the boards and behind the
three-point line. He had two of the three pointers , one of which came after he grabbed an offense rebound. PC was able
to maintain the lead after heading into intermission, but only before Amu Saaka of the Paladins had led his team back to a three-point ball game with two powerful
dunks.
During the first 20 minutes of play, PC drilled 14-of-26 shots for 53.8 percent from the field. The squad also
connected on five-of-nine from downtown. Leading in every category, PC had 10
points in the paint and 14 points off turnovers. The Blue Hose were up by three
points at the end of the first half, 33-30.
The start of the second half opened up with a heated battle
to see who could control the lead. Holmes had a three pointer early in the
first half to extend the lead to four and Allen followed with a block on the
other side of the court. Furman took the lead for the first time in the game at
the 15:17 mark, with a 25-foot three-ball from Saaka. PC answered with a three
pointer from the same spot by Allen. Seconds later Saaka tied the ball game at
41 with a dunk in the low post. The lead changed one more time before Furman
took control of the game and lead the game for the last 11 minutes of the game.
The Blue Hose fought hard to keep the dominance they had
shown in the first half and kept the game close, bringing it to a two point
game in the last 39 seconds of the game. Holmes
delivered a three point play with an agile layup that was turned into an
and-one opportunity. He made the free-throw and brought the game to a two-point margin. Furman took a 30-second
timeout and came out of the break by forcing PC to commit a foul. Furman's Darryl
Evans made his second free throw after missing the first and allowed the
Paladins to go up by three. Furman
then extended its lead to five off
of two more free-throw shots after Holmes missed a tough layup at the PC end of
the court.
Holmes then took
control of the ball and sprinted downcourt past an array of Furman players and
rattled the backboard with a hard dunk. The game was brought back to a three-point
margin. The game ended with one more made
free-throw to broaden the home team's lead to four. PC was unable to score
again as the clock ran out.
PC finished the game 24-of-52 from the field for 46.2 percent. The squad also knocked down
8-of-16 three pointers for 50 percent. The Blue Hose were very effective from
the foul line, shooting 8-of-9 for 88.9 percent.
