LAS VEGAS, NEV. - Two student-athletes scored a
team-best 18 points, but it was not enough as Presbyterian College committed 23 turnovers in the 67-63
loss to Seattle in Las Vegas Friday.
The Blue Hose (0-5) were led by Jake Troyli and Chase Holmes, who each
accounted for 18 points. Seattle (4-2) was led by Charles Garcia.
PC played
arguably its best offensive game of the year, canning 52.4 percent of its shots
from the floor (22-42). Seattle shot just 39 percent for the game,
but turned the ball over a mere eight times.
Travis
Smith dished out a game-high five assists and tallied eight points. Walt Allen
also chipped in eight points while Khalid Mutakkabir also chimed in with six.
The teams
played even for much of the first half as the biggest lead was at five, 27-22,
by Seattle. However, the lead did not last
long as Allen took a pass from Miss for an easy bucket. Troyli then stole the
ball and nailed a jumper, whittling the advantage to one. Mutakabbir's charity
toss a minute later tied the game for the seventh time.
With just
under three minutes to play, Allen hit two foul shots to put PC up 29-27. A 6-0 run by the home team put Seattle up four, but Allen once again
connected on a short jumper off a pass from Zach Faircloth for a 33-31
intermission score.
Head coach
Gregg Nibert's halftime speech went well as Troyli came out firing. He hit his
first two jumpers, giving the Blue Hose a 35-33 lead.
The teams were tied at 41 apiece when Seattle took the lead for good on a lay-up.
With 9:42 to play, PC found itself down seven. However, the youngest
team in the nation would continue to fight.
Mutakabbir's
three-ball sliced the lead to just four. Less than a minute later, Reynolds hit
a lay-up to pull the team within two, 49-47.
Seattle built the lead to eight with 6:25 to play and held a seven-point
advantage with just 1:36 to go.
Holmes hit
two foul shots and Smith drained his three-point shot to pull the team within
two with 44 seconds to go. However, Garcia's jumper put the Blue Hose down four
with just eight seconds remaining.
