Blue Hose Knock Off Coastal Carolina, 65-62

CLINTON, S.C. ? After two starters had fouled out, Chase Holmes' rebound with three seconds left sealed the deal for the Presbyterian College men's basketball team Wednesday evening as the squad held on to defeat Coastal Carolina 65-62 in a crucial Big South Conference game.

The Blue Hose improve to 10-12 on the season and 7-4 in Big South play. The Chanticleers fall to 9-14 overall and 3-8 against conference competition.

Leading the way for head coach Gregg Nibert's team was senior Bryan Bostic, who accounted for 17 points in 32 minutes of play. Bostic also chimed in with five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

Off the bench, Aaron Gibbs netted 16 points on an exceptional seven-of-eight shooting from the field. He chipped in six boards in 29 minutes of action. Holmes almost garnered a double-double off the bench, accounting for nine points and nine rebounds to go along with two steals.

With 15:45 to go in the game, Holmes drilled a jumper and connected on the ensuing charity toss to put the Blue Hose up by 17, 37-20. From that point on, the Chanticleers slowly cut into the lead. At the 12:39 mark, Mario Edwards' lay-up cut the deficit to 10. However, PC put forth a total team effort to push the lead back to 17 with just under nine minutes to go.

Mario Sisinni, who netted a game-high 34 points, drained shot after shot, pulled the visitors within striking distance.

With 2:05 to play, Pierre Miller hit two foul shots to put the Blue Hose up 58-49. A free throw nine seconds later made the margin 10, but the Chanticleers would not give up.

Sisinni hit a lay-up and Joseph Harris made a foul shot, followed by a lay-up, making the score 59-54 in favor of the home team.

After a Holmes free throw, Sisinni hit a three-ball, pulling the team within three. With 41 seconds to go, Bostic stepped to the line and hit a pair of free throws, making the score 64-59. Then, Sisinni hit a jumper and followed it up with a foul shot, slicing the deficit to two, 64-62. Gibbs made a free throw with 22 seconds to play and the Blue Hose stepped up the defense, not allowing a clear look at the basket.

Solid defense forced Steven Sexton to fire up an ill-advised three-pointer, but PC touched the ball before it went out of bounds. A foul by Nibert's team with five seconds to go put Mario Edwards at the line. He missed both shots, but Dexter Moore gathered the rebound and fired the ball back to Edwards, who launched a three. The ball bounced away and Holmes went up to grab the rebound with three seconds to play. He pivoted out of a potential foul, securing the win for PC.

The Blue Hose played a solid first half, taking a 30-20 lead into the break. Bostic accounted for 14 of the first-half points, hitting five-of-nine from the floor, including four-of-five from behind the arc.

Up 8-6 in the early going, PC went on a 12-2 spurt that spanned six minutes of play. During the run, Miller drained two threes, Gibson accounted for four points and Bostic nailed a shot from deep. With the score at 27-20 with 2:23 to play, Bostic hit a three-pointer with 59 seconds to go for the last score of the half.

For the game, PC outscored the visitors 25-0 in bench points. The Blue Hose connected on 21-of-49 shots in the game for 42.9 percent. Coastal Carolina hit 22-of-53 shots for 41.5 percent. Each team nailed seven three-point buckets in the game. The squads combined to hit 27-of-55 foul shots while 50 fouls were called.

The Blue Hose return to action Saturday evening when they travel to Radford, Va., for a critical conference game against the Highlanders of Radford at 7 p.m.
