CLINTON, S.C.
? The Presbyterian College men's basketball team held its second straight home
opponent to 15 points in a half en route to a 76-61 win over UNC Asheville in
the season finale.
The Blue Hose conclude their season with a 12-17 mark, but went 9-9 in Big South
Conference play in the first year in the league. The Bulldogs stand at 15-15 on
the season and 10-8 against conference competition.
Senior Bryan Bostic erupted for a career-high 25 points on
nine-of-11 shooting from the floor. He also had two assists and two steals to
go along with one block. Fellow senior Travis Sligh played 28 minutes and
nearly notched his first career double-double, amassing seven points and eight
rebounds to go along with three steals. He tied his career high with three
thefts.
Sophomore Al'Lonzo Coleman had 17 points and seven rebounds in addition to a
career-high four assists. Rookie Chase Holmes netted 14 points, including three
dunks, and pulled down six boards. Pierre Miller dished out a game-high six
assists.
The Blue Hose opened things up in the first half, scoring 38 points while
limiting UNC Asheville to just 15. PC canned 15-of-27 shots from the floor
while limiting the opposition to four-of-25 shooting from the field. PC's
defense forced the Bulldogs into 0-for-8 from behind the arc in the first 20
minutes of play.
Josh Johnson opened the scoring with a three-pointer 55 seconds
into the game. Up 7-6 at the 15:34
mark, head coach Gregg Nibert's team went on a 22-3 run that spanned 6:40,
giving the home team a 29-9 working margin.
The lead steadily grew to 24 on Coleman's lay-up off a Bostic pass with 4:47
to go in the half. It would eventually stand at a 23-point lead heading into
intermission after Bostic drained a three-point ball with 1:35 to go, making
the score 38-15.
During the first-half run, the Blue Hose held Asheville
without a field goal for 13:45
in the first half. The Bulldogs made a basket at the 13:55
mark and did not hit another shot from the floor until a lay-up by J.P. Primm
with 2:10
remaining, making the score 35-15 at that point in time.
At halftime, the Blue Hose rested up for what turned out to be a tougher second
half. However, things got going in fine fashion for PC, pushing the lead to 28
points, 54-26, with 13:40
to go after a lay-up by Coleman.
Asheville
slowly climbed back into the contest, trimming the deficit to just 11 with 4:47
remaining. However, a quick 6-0 spurt by Nibert's team made the margin 17 with 2:43
to go. The run was highlighted by two lay-ups by Bostic and a lay-up by Holmes.
Holmes, who had two first-half dunks, got his third of the game with 1:20
remaining, putting the score at 72-56. With Asheville
pressing, Bostic found Holmes, who emphatically slammed home his third dunk of
the night.
The Blue Hose made their foul shots down the stretch, giving the team the
15-point victory.
For the game, PC shot an outstanding 60.4 percent from the floor, marking the
highest field goal percentage for the program against a Division I opponent. The
Blue Hose controlled the boards, grabbing 38 to just 28 for the visitors.
PC loses just two student-athletes this year due to graduation. Bostic and
Sligh helped the program win 62 games in their four years. The two played in
two NCAA Tournament games during their rookie campaigns, defeating Armstrong
Atlantic in the opening round. The two were a part of 38 home wins against just
four losses.
