LYNCHBURG, Va. ? The Presbyterian College men's
tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at Liberty Monday afternoon in its last Big
South Conference match of the season.
The Blue
Hose now stand at 5-13 overall and 1-5 in Big South Conference play. The
Flames improve to 12-9 overall and 2-4 against conference competition.
Leading the
way for PC was No. 1 seed Matthew Martin. He topped Clay Cypert in three sets,
6-2, 1-6, 6-3 in the first singles match. The Blue
Hose also picked up a point when No. 5 Andrew Lee downed Otavio Costa 6-4, 6-1.
Zachary
Sprouse, at the No. 4 position, nearly won over Louis Steyn. Sprouse won the
first set 6-1 before dropping the second set 6-4. Sprouse lost a heartbreaker
in the third set, 7-6 (3-0).
Patrick
Fediuk, playing the No. 3 slot, fell to Chad Simpson 6-4, 6-3 while
sixth-seeded Mark Cannatelli lost by an identical score to Juan Reyes.
Michael
Nicol, the No. 2 student-athlete, lost a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Giancarlo Lemmi.
The match
began with the doubles competition.
Martin and
Sprouse fell to No. 1 seed Cypert and Giancarolo 8-4. However, head coach
Patric Hynes' team bounced back as Fediuk and Nicol doused Simpson and Gregorio
Machado 8-3.
The Blue
Hose were unable to pull off the doubles point as Lee and Brad Luciuk lost to
Reyes and Steyn 8-3.
PC returns
to action Sunday against Georgia Southern. The match is slated to
begin at 1 p.m., at the PC Tennis Complex. It marks the squad's last match
of the year.
