CHARLESTON, S.C. - Despite a 26-point performance by
sophomore Chase Holmes, the Presbyterian College men's basketball team dropped
a 79-73 overtime decision to Charleston Southern Saturday evening.
The Blue Hose now stand at 2-13 overall and 0-3 in Big South
Conference play. The Bucs are 6-7 on the season and 1-2 against conference competition.
Thanks in part to 11 points by Holmes over the final
4:45, the Blue Hose overcame five-point deficit to take a 34-32 lead into the
intermission. In the opening half, PC canned 13-of-29 shots for 44.8 percent - with Holmes draining
six-of-10.
The Blue Hose opened up a four-point lead at 8-4 on Walt
Allen's backdoor lay-up with 15:19 to go in the opening period. After a short
Travis Smith jumper to open the scoring, Allen connected on three straight
short shots to make the score 8-4 while Smith finshed the game with 16 points.
In the first stanza, PC forced the Bucs into 39.3 percent
shooting as the team hit 11-of-28 shots from the floor.
Holmes continued his stellar play in the second half,
scoring the first four points for head coach Gregg Nibert's team. Khalid
Mutakabbir's touchdown pass to Troyli netted PC a 40-37 lead. Mutakkabir was
taking the ball out for the Blue Hose and hit Troyli on a comeback pass at PC's
free throw line. Troyli then made a beautiful behind-the-back move, spun and
made a short turnaround shot while being fouled for the bucket.
Down 48-46, Troyli hit two free throws, Ryan Hargrave
canned a short jumper from the wing and Smith hit back-to-back shots for the
Blue Hose, building a six-point edge.
As both teams stepped up the defensive pressure, it
became harder for the opposition to score. The Bucs whittled away the lead,
eventually tying the contest at 60 apiece on Jamarco Warren's fadeaway jumper.
Trying to hold a late lead, PC had just one field goal in
the last 5:24. As Smith made one-of-two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to put the Blue Hose up 68-65, the
Bucs' Warren drained a three-point shot with two seconds to go, forcing the
overtime period.
In the extra session, PC was held without a field goal
until Mutakabbir's shot with 2:03 to play. A minute later, Troyli was sent to
the line, hitting one of two, to pull Nibert's squad within two, 75-73.
However, Jeremy Sexton hit two field goals from close range in the final 38
seconds and PC was unable to make a field goal during that time as the Bucs
secured the six-point win.
Troyli finished the game with 14 points.
The Blue Hose return to action Monday evening when they
take on the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. Tip is slated for
