BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. -
Walt Allen poured in a career-high 15 points, but it was not enough for the
Presbyterian College men's basketball team Thursday evening as the Blue Hose
fell to Gardner-Webb 64-57 in Paul Porter Arena.
The Blue Hose now stand at 3-17 on the season and 1-7 in Big South Conference
play while the Bulldogs improve to 6-12 on the year and 3-5 against conference
competition.
A trio of PC student-athletes tallied double figures as Jake Troyli and Ryan
Hargrave each chipped in 11. Hargrave grabbed 10 rebounds for his second
double-double in the last three games - and in his career.
In the opening half, PC used a 6-0 run to go ahead 18-9 over a three-minute
span. Up 12-9 at the 9:31 mark, Zach Faircloth drained a deep three-point shot
just under the nine-minute mark. Neither team could score for the next three
minutes. Then, Ryan Hargrave hit a pair of charity tosses for the Blue Hose.
PC built a 10-point lead at 26-16 after five quick points in 30 seconds. After
Auryn MacMillan hit a lay-up with 3:57 to go, Travis Smith hit a three-ball for
an eight-point advantage.
Holmes then stole the ball and was fouled. He buried both foul shots for the
largest lead of the stanza for the visitors.
PC hit nine-of-26 shots for 34.6 percent from the field in the first half. The
Blue Hose limited their turnovers to four while forcing 10. A major factor for
PC holding the halftime margin was its second-chance points. The Blue Hose had
seven second-chance points off seven offensive rebounds while holding GWU to
just one second-chance point over the first 20 minutes.
PC hit just one three-point shot over the first few minutes of the second half
as the Bulldogs continued on their run from the first period. GWU took a 30-29
lead after going on a 13-3 run over a five-minute span. However, PC quickly
regained the lead on Khalid Mutakabbir's lay-up off a pass from Faircloth for
the 31-30 advantage.
Late in the second half, Holmes gave PC a five-point edge after receiving the
ball near midcourt with four seconds left on the shot clock. He was able to
weave his way through three defenders and drained a finger roll as the shot
clock expired for a 45-40 advantage.
In the waning seconds of the second half with the teams tied at 49, Holmes
tried to drive the ball into the lane, but was whistled for a turnover. Travis
Smith stole the inbounds pass and launched a three that hit off the rim. The
ball bounced away and neither team was able to get a shot off before regulation
ended, forcing the overtime session.
The Blue Hose fought extremely hard in overtime, but Grayson Flittner was able
to make a couple of late free throws and the Bulldogs made a lay-up as time
expired for the final margin. .
PC hit 20-of-62 shots for the game for 32.3 percent. The Blue Hose grabbed 14
offensive rebounds in the game, resulting in 10 second-chance points.
The Blue Hose return to action Saturday afternoon at UNC Asheville. Tip is
slated for 4:30 p.m.
