CLINTON, S.C. - Presbyterian College women's
soccer extended its winning streak to three on Friday night as the Blue Hose
comprehensively defeated VMI to open league play, 2-0. Junior Morgan Fragapane scored twice in the
victory to vault herself into the team scoring lead.
The Blue Hose
improve to 4-6-1 on the year while VMI falls to 1-10 on the year. PC is undefeated 1-0 in league play while the
Keydets are 0-1 in the Big South.
"We had a
great night offensively," said head coach Brian Purcell. "The team was focused and put in hard work
all evening to get the win. I'm very
proud of our defense to get their third straight shutout despite some injuries
on the back line."
The Blue Hose offense
was strong all night with a total of 25 shots, the second highest total of the
season. The win also sets a Division I
era record for wins in a season at four.
Super sub
Fragapane opened the scoring in the 35th minute when Jessica Kramer played a
long ball from the midfield into the penalty area. The ball bounced and came to Fragapane at the
far edge of the six-yard box. She struck
the ball and delivered it into the goal for a 1-0 PC lead.
Fragapane
struck again just eight minutes later off an assist by Katie Hunter. The senior, Hunter, played a cross from the
far wing to the center of the box where Fragapane struck the ball at full
stretch to score for the second time of the night. The goal raised her season goals tally to
two.
The Blue Hose
took the 2-0 lead into the halftime break for the second time in 2010.
In the second
half, the Blue Hose siege of the Keydet goal continued when Sara Simpson fed
Stephanie Aaron at ten yards out. She
senior struck the ball in stride but was denied by the crossbar.
Current Big
South Defensive Player of the Week validated her award with the third
consecutive clean sheet on her resume.
The junior captain stopped eight shots as the Keydets took ten total
tries.
The Blue Hose
