CLINTON, S.C. - Behind 49.1 percent shooting from the floor, the
Presbyterian College men's basketball team defeated Newberry College 83-61 in
an exhibition game between two long-time rivals Thursday evening.
The Blue Hose were led by redshirt-junior Josh Johnson's 22 points while
preseason all-conference honoree Al'Lonzo Coleman accounted for 12 points and
11 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play. Sophomore Khalid Mutakabbir netted 14
points while pulling down nine rebounds while Jake Troyli chipped in 11.
After Newberry pulled within eight with 9:26 to play, PC embarked on an 11-2
run and never looked back. Mutakabbir started the run with a lay-up off a fast
break. Troyli followed it up with a short jumper to push the margin to 12. With
6:56 to go, the Wolves' jumper cut the deficit to 10. However, Johnson answered
with back-to-back free throws to go ahead 62-50.
Coleman then went through two defenders to grab a rebound and then hit a
streaking Pierre Miller on the break. Miller caught the ball in stride, went up
and made a twisting lay-up while absorbing the contact by the wolves' defender.
He calmly stepped to the line and canned the free throw to complete the
three-point play.
Troyli made two free throws before Newberry made one-of-two attempts to make
the score 67-51. Ryan Hargrave scored the next three points for head coach
Gregg Nibert's team before Johnson, who redshirted a year ago, got back into
the action, draining the next four points, all of which came in the paint.
PC held the lead above 20 the rest of the way, stretching the lead to 24 on
Mutakabbir's free throw with just over a minute remaining. With the Wolves
continuing to put pressure on the ball in the waning seconds, redshirt-senior
Walt Allen zipped a pass inside to a wide open Jay Reynolds, who dropped home
an easy bucket for the final margin.
The Blue Hose opened the game on a 12-2 run in the first 2:27 behind Johnson,
who drained two three-point buckets from 24-feet out.
PC maintained a solid lead throughout much of the first half, but the Wolves
caught fire late, trimming the working margin to six, 39-33, at the
intermission.
The Blue Hose accounted for 15 fast-break points while limiting Newberry to
just two. Nibert's team held the advantage in the paint, outscoring the Wolves
36-30.
For the game, PC hit 26-of-53 attempts for 49.1 percent while holding the
visitors to just 22-of-61 shooting from the floor for 36.1 percent.
The Blue Hose open the 2010-11 season at Vanderbilt Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. EST.
