AUBURN, Ala.
- Four players scored
in double figures for Presbyterian College as the Blue Hose went into Auburn
Saturday evening and defeated the host Tigers 62-59 behind a total team effort.
The Blue Hose (5-6) shot 23-of-38 (60.5 percent) from the floor, including
10-of-20 (50 percent) from behind the three-point arc in the win. Despite
shooting six-of-11 from the charity stripe, Al'Lonzo Coleman's free throw with
one second left sealed the victory for head coach Gregg Nibert's team, which
defeated its first-ever school from a BCS Conference. Auburn now stands at 3-7.
"The way we got the win was awesome," Nibert said. "I could not be prouder of
the basketball team. Walt Allen and Al'Lonzo Coleman played their hearts out.
Joshua Clyburn and Tyler Deihl came in and made some big plays.
"Tonight it was a total team effort. We beat a heck of a team. This is a huge
win for us. We are the smallest Division I school in the country and came to
Auburn and beat them. It shows everyone what kind of school we have."
Sophomore Khalid Mutakabbir poured in a game-high 17 points. Coleman dropped in
13 points while grabbing 16 rebounds. Allen connected for 12 points and six
rebounds while Pierre Miller accounted for 10 points.
The Blue Hose opened the game on a 19-4 run. After falling behind 2-0,
Mutakabbir's old-fashioned three-point play gave PC a one-point edge.
Mutakabbir then found Walt Allen for a three pointer and a 6-2 advantage. The
Tigers scored a bucket, but Mutakabbir answered with a three-ball at the 17:06
mark for a 9-4 margin. He was not done scoring. On the next possession, Allen
found him for a jumper to make it 11-4.
After the media time-out, Pierre Miller drained a deep three off a pass from
Mutakabbir. The Blue Hose defense forced Auburn into a missed shot. A rebound
by Miller got things going for PC. At the 14:38 mark, Miller hit another
three-point shot for a 17-4 score. Just 37 seconds later, Coleman got into the
scoring column with a jumper.
On two occasions, the Blue Hose widened the margin to 17 points in the opening
stanza. It was not until the 6:31 mark that the Tigers reached double figures,
coming on the heels of a three pointer by Earnest Ross, making the score 30-12.
At the 3:36 mark, Mutakabbir found Tyler Deihl for a three-point bucket,
marking the first points of Deihl's career. The basket gave PC a 36-19 edge.
Four quick points by the Tigers pulled the home team within 13, but Coleman's
lay-up in the final minute gave the teams the halftime score of 38-23.
In the opening period, Mutakabbir accounted for a team-best 11 points while
Coleman had already pulled down 11 rebounds. Miller had netted nine points
while Allen had chipped in eight. On the 14 made baskets by head coach Gregg
Nibert's team, PC had accounted for 10 assists.
In the half, the Blue Hose connected on 14-of-21 shots (66.7 percent),
including nine-of-1 three-point tries for 64.3 percent.
The Tigers tried to make a furious comeback in the final 20 minutes and nearly
did. The home squad held PC without a point for 6:33 and trimmed the deficit
from nine to one with just 2:30 to go. However, the Blue Hose stepped up to the
challenge.
With the score 52-51 in favor of the Blue Hose, Coleman cut through the defense
for a lay-up. A jumper by Auburn once again cut the lead to one, 54-53. Then,
Mutakabbir, who had been somewhat quiet on the offensive front in the second
half, stepped back and drained a huge three-point shot with 1:33 to go.
A bucket by Auburn with 1:00 to go made the score 57-55. Then, the fifth-year
senior, Allen, got inside and the former "Mr. Basketball" from Kentucky laid
the ball in with 38 seconds to go.
With 22 seconds to play, Miller sank a free throw to make it 60-57. The Tigers
pulled within one with 12 seconds to go, but the Blue Hose stood strong in the
waning seconds. Mutakabbir made one free throw with seven ticks to go for a
61-59 lead. Coleman grabbed a rebound and was fouled with one second to play.
He made the first before missing the second for the three-point win.
Allen and Mutakabbir played all 40 minutes while Coleman rested for just two
minutes. As PC outrebounded Auburn, it marked the fourth time in five wins that
the Blue Hose held the advantage on the boards.
PC accounted for eight second-chance points while limiting the Tigers to four.
Nibert's team built its largest lead at the 6:52 mark of the first half, going
up 21.
The Blue Hose, winners of their last two and three of their last four, will
look to keep their winning ways on Tuesday at Wake Forest. Tip-off is slated
for 7 p.m.
