WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Adding to a legendary week for Presbyterian College, Khalid
Mutakabbir's lay-up in the waning seconds helped the Blue Hose men's basketball
team pull off a 66-64 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe Wake Forest
Tuesday evening in non-conference action.
The Blue Hose now stand at 6-6 on the season while the Demon Deacons fall to
6-6.
Redshirt-junior Al'Lonzo Coleman posted a game-high 20 points to lead the way
on eight-of-13 shooting from the floor. He was just one of four PC
student-athletes to reach double figures. Mutakabbir netted 14 points; Pierre
Miller added 11 while Walt Allen chipped in 10.
Miller dished out a game-high five assists while pulling down five rebounds.
Ryan Hargrave came off the bench and grabbed a team-best six boards in nine
minutes of action. After missing the last few games, redshirt-junior Josh
Johnson returned to the line-up, giving the team a boost.
"This was unbelievable," head coach Gregg Nibert said. "Wake Forest has
tremendous guards and the team shoots a high percentage from the three-point
line. Khalid Mutakabbir played good defense on the perimeter and really cut the
three off.
"It was good to have Josh Johnson back tonight. This game was a total team
victory. I couldn't be prouder of the team. The first half won the game for us.
To be up 10 at the half was great. We executed down the stretch. It's
incredible to have wins over Auburn and Wake Forest in the same week."
PC limited Wake Forest to just two-of-10 shooting from behind the arc while
canning eight-of-16 from the bonussphere. For the game, Nibert's squad drilled
24-of-48 shots while the Demon Deacons hit 26-of-57.
Coleman's lay-up tied the game at 2-2. The teams traded points in the next few minutes
to make it 6-6. It marked the last time the squads would have the same score
until it reached 64-64 with 43 seconds remaining in the game. For the rest of
the time, the Blue Hose held the lead.
Mutakabbir's three-point shot with 16:05 to play gave Nibert's team a lead it
would not relinquish the rest of the half. A quick three by Miller and a lay-up
by Coleman made it 14-8 with 14:20 to go. Neither team hit another field goal
until 10:23 to go, when a bucket by the Demon Deacons made it 14-12. However,
Allen, a former "Mr. Basketball" from Kentucky, added to his legendary status
by draining a three off a fast break on a tremendous look from Miller.
With the score at 25-22 in favor of PC, Coleman connected on back-to-back
baskets off passes from Allen and Miller. Mutakabbir and Troyli added free throws
in the final two minutes and Mutakabbir, who once again played all 40 minutes,
sank a three-point shot with three ticks remaining in the first half for a
36-26 advantage at the break.
With just 16:16 to play, Coleman's jumper pushed PC's lead to 14, 44-30. At the
12:13 mark, the lead was trimmed to nine, 51-42. Jake Troyli's shot made it
57-44 at the 10:31 mark, but the home team put together a run, knotting the
score on a three-point shot with 41 seconds remaining.
After a time-out by Wake Forest, Nibert's team worked the ball around. Allen
gave it to Miller, who backed it out before swinging it to Mutakabbir. The
sophomore went one-on-one with his man and hit a twisting lay-up with eight seconds
remaining for a 66-64 lead.
PC called time-out as did Wake Forest. Allen and Miller then stopped the Demon
Deacons attack by fouling them as the Garnet and Blue had two fouls to give
before the Demon Deacons would reach the one-and-one.
The Demon Deacons were unable to get a shot off in time, giving the mighty Blue
hose their third straight win - and second consecutive over a team from a power
conference.
"Our assistant coaches are tremendous at game-planning," Nibert said. "Now we
have to get rested and have a good practice while getting ready for a good Old
Dominion team."
The Blue Hose now head to ODU for a Thursday evening affair at 7 p.m. Fans can
