CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College men's tennis team found itself
down in the early going before knotting up the score at three apiece. However,
UNC Charlotte was able to prevail 4-3 after clinching the last match of the
day.
The Blue Hose now stand at 0-7 on the season while the 49ers improve to 1-2.
After losing the doubles point and dropping the first two singles matches that
finished, head coach Patric Hynes' team roared back in fine fashion to tie the
contest at 3-3.
With the score at 3-0, Matthew Martin knocked off Martin Lecamp in straight
sets, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 position to put the home team on the board.
As momentum was on the side of the Blue Hose, rookie Ryan Walters came from one
set down to upend Chris Huynh as the No. 6 seed. After losing 6-4 in the first
set, Walters won the next two in convincing fashion, 6-0, 6-4 to pull PC within
one, 3-2.
Newcomer Andrew Brigham evened the match, winning his contest at the top slot.
He downed Moritz Bernhoerster 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
The match came down to the fourth seed. Zachary Sprouse squared off against
Anthony Davison and fell behind after losing the first set 7-5. He then evened
his match by winning the second set 7-5. However, PC fell just short as he lost
the decisive set 6-1.
In the doubles competition that kicked off the day, the 49ers won the second
and third seeded matches by 8-1 and 8-6 scores, respectively.
Brigham and Martin each finished the day 2-0 as the doubles tandem recorded an
8-6 victory over Bernhoerster and Michael Anders.
The Blue Hose return to action Thursday afternoon when they host Winston-Salem
State at 3 p.m.
