HIGH POINT, N.C.-The Presbyterian College men's basketball team came out strong
to start the second half with an 8-0 run featuring back-to-back three pointer
baskets, but the Blue Hose ultimately couldn't overtake High Point, eventually
losing 67-48 in their last game of the season.
PC
(5-26, 2-16 BSC) was paced by Ryan Hargrave's 12 points, while Khalid
Mutakabbir and Jake Troyli each chipped in ten points for the Blue Hose. Walt
Allen and Hargrave each pulled down eight rebounds for PC for the game.
The
Blue Hose started the second half with back to back three point baskets by
Chase Holmes, and then a layup by Walt Allen for an eight-point run. High Point
(15-14, 10-8 BSC) hit two free throws, but Mutakabbir sank PC's third three
pointer of the half to cut into the Panthers' lead and make the score 34-33
with 16:06 remaining in the game.
High
Point responded to regain a 10-point advantage at 12:41, but a pair of free
throws and then a layup on the ensuing possession by Hargrave put PC down by
only six, 45-39, at the 11:54 mark.
PC
battled in the next five minutes of the second half, and despite five free
throws and a jumper by Troyli for seven straight points for PC, High Point lead
59-48 with just under five minutes left.
The
Panthers would extend their lead in the waning minutes, eventually pulling
ahead to win 67-48.
The
Blue Hose shot 31.4 percent from the field for the game, and were 7-19 from
behind the three point line for a 36.8 percentage.
To
start the game, Hargrave hit a three pointer at 19:28 to start the scoring for
PC, but High Point answered with a 6-0 run to make it 8-3 at the 15:53 mark. Mutakabbir
sank a three point basket to break a scoreless three and a half minutes for the
Blue Hose, followed by a layup from Jay Reynolds for a 5-0 run for PC.
The
Blue Hose hit their third three pointer of the game to take their first lead at
11-10 with 11:59 remaining in the first half. The Panthers, however, hit
back-to-back three point baskets to retake a 16-11 advantage. High Point
extended its lead to eight points with just over three minutes left in the half,
but a jumper by Travis Smith at the 2:57 mark brought PC to within six points,
28-22.
A
three pointer in the last minutes by the Panthers, however, would help them
take a 32-22 lead into the locker room at half time.
The
Blue Hose end the 2009-10 year with a 5-26 overall record and a 2-16 standing
in the Big South Conference. The 2009-10 campaign by PC featured the youngest
team in the nation as juniors Al'Lonzo Coleman, Josh Johnson and Pierre Miller
redshirted and will return for the 2010-11 season.
