LEXINGTON, Va. - Presbyterian College
baseball broke multiple records on Friday afternoon in the season's penultimate
game with the 23-7 victory in the first game of a season-ending doubleheader
for the Blue Hose. A 10-run eighth
inning blew the game open for the visitors.
The win took PC to 14 wins on the season to set a new Division I record
for wins in a season as well as runs in a single game. The 23 runs were also the most runs since
March 8, 2005 when the Blue Hose posted 25 runs against the Saints.
PC (14-29,
6-20 BSC) was led by Nate Horton's 5-for-7 game at the plate with three
RBI. Aaron Preston, the center fielder
and ninth batter in the lineup, went 4-for-6 on the day and knocked in four
RBI.
The Blue Hose
took the fight to VMI (32-19, 13-13 BSC) from the opening pitch. Kenny Bryant's single was the last of three
straight two-out hits in the first inning.
The hit brought Horton home and moved Tony Micklon to third. Later in the frame, Bryant stole second, but
a throwing error by the catcher allowed Micklon to score the second run of the game.
In the second
stanza, Preston plated his first RBI of the game with a single up the middle to
drive Jesse Harmon home.
The hit parade
kept on rolling in the third when Horton and Micklon scored yet again, this
time off two hits in the frame. In the
fourth inning, four more runs came in to give PC a 9-0 lead.
VMI made its
first noise in the bottom of the fourth with three runs off three hits in the
inning. PC answered an inning later with
four runs in the inning to erase VMI's gains and take a 13-3 lead.
Starting
pitcher Joe Hammond lasted five innings for PC and allowed three runs off seven
hits in his appearance. He fanned four
while walking four in the five innings of work.
VMI struck
again with a single run in the sixth inning to bring the score back to 13-4.
Both teams were
quiet in the seventh before PC erupted for 10 insurance runs in the eighth
inning. Seven hits and two Keydet errors
accented the inning in which PC went out to a 23-4 lead. Jeff Tatum, Preston and Grammer each went for
doubles in the inning. The two-bagger
for Grammer was his second of the day to go with his triple earlier in the day.
VMI strung
together three hits to bring home three runs in the bottom of the eighth and
account for the final line of 23-7.
Hammond earned
the victory to improve to 1-6 and earn his first win since the 2008
campaign. VMI's Farley fell to 4-4 on
the year.
PC will face
VMI again on Friday evening for the season finale which is slated to begin soon
after game one.
