BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Presbyterian College men's tennis team,
competing during the fall season, recently went 14-4 at the Gardner-Webb
Invitational.
The Blue Hose opened the invitational with a shutout of nearby Wofford. The
Terriers brought two different teams to the event, but PC bested both squads.
In the opening contest of the day, PC took on Wofford's second team. Unlike the
spring season, the fall tournament began with singles play.
Rookies Grayson Mills and Nathan Crocker, playing the top two spots, each won
two sets to one. Mills rebounded from a 6-4 defeat in the first set to record
7-5, 5-3 wins to take the match. Crocker bested his counterpart, winning 6-3,
6-7, 6-3.
Ryan Walters and Edward Snead IV also went three sets in their respective
matches. Walters won 6-7, 7-5, 6-4 and Snead did by scores of 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Mills and Snead won their doubles match 8-3 while Walters and Crocker defeated
their opponent 8-5.
In the second match of the day, PC won 5-1 over Wofford's top team at the
event. Mills and Snead remained perfect with an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles
while Crocker and Walters were pushed hard before winning 8-6.
Mills cruised to a 6-4, 6-3 victory in singles play while Crocker and Snead
each won in three sets. Crocker won 6-7, 6-1, 11-9 while Snead posted a 4-6,
6-3, 12-10 victory. Walters lost 7-5, 6-4.
In the final match of the day, PC and the host institution tied at 3-3. Mills
and Snead downed their doubles team 8-4 while Crocker and Walters won by an 8-5
score. In doubles play, Mills and Walters each fell in three-set heartbreakers.
Snead won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Overall, PC went 6-0 in doubles play and 8-4 in singles competition. The Blue
Hose return to action Oct. 2-3 at Wofford's Tournament.
