LEXINGTON, Va. - The Presbyterian College women's soccer team ended its first weekend of Big South Conference play with a 1-1 tie against VMI on Saturday afternoon, playing to a draw after VMI scored the game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation.
PC moves to 2-8-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in Big South play. VMI sees its record go to 3-5-2 and 0-1-1 in league action.
The game marked the first time PC had played an overtime period since September 22, 2010, a stretch that spanned 20 matches.
Gracie Boswell (Simpsonville, S.C.) scored her team-leading second goal of the year to give PC a lead in the first half. She recorded two shots on the day.
Five different PC players registered a shot on goal and six members of the Blue Hose posted two shots against the Keydets.
PC goalkeeper and reigning Big South Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga.) made five saves in the effort, including three in the second half.
The Blue Hose attack pressured the Keydets early on as Brittany Whitson (Conyers, Ga.) and Kelly Kozera (Rome, Ga.) each fired shots on VMI goalkeeper Amanda Berrios.
Shortly after a Keydet shot hit the crossbar, PC found the net on the other end to grab a 1-0 lead. In the 38th minute, Boswell collected a loose ball inside the goal box and tucked a shot into the lower right corner of the net for a Blue Hose goal.
Morgan Fragapane (Baltimore, Md.) looked to add to the lead with a shot in the final minute of the half but Berrios made the save as the half ended with PC ahead, 1-0.
Anderson's three saves kept the clean sheet intact during the second half as time wound down. Heading into the final minute, a PC foul gave VMI a free kick 20 yards out and stopped the clock. The kick came off of Anderson and bounced to Simone Jimenez, who converted from in close to tie the match with 46 seconds remaining, 1-1. The teams then headed into overtime.
VMI tested Anderson once in the first overtime but the senior met the challenge and kept out a Myranda Emery shot to enter the final overtime still tied at 1-1.
A Keydet giveaway gave Rebecca Miller (Pauline, S.C.) an open shot in the 104th minute as the Blue Hose looked for the win. Berrios made the save, however, and the match ended in a 1-1 deadlock.
PC next heads to UNC Asheville on Tuesday for an afternoon contest at 3 p.m.
