Radford used nine blocks, a .306 hitting percentage and capitalized on 22 Blue Hose errors to defeat the Presbyterian College volleyball team, 3-0, in Big South Conference action tonight at Templeton Arena. The Highlanders won by scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-12.
Radford improves to 11-12 overall and 5-3 in the Big South, while Presbyterian College drops to 8-15 and 3-5.
A 5-0 advantage in blocks was the difference in the first set as Radford won 25-21. Tied 7-7, Radford scored five unanswered points, highlighted by three blocks, to take the 12-7 lead. Two kills and a service ace gave PC a small 3-1 run to cut the margin to three, 13-10, but Radford responded and outscored the Blue Hose 7-3 to take a 20-13 lead. PC capitalized on four Radford errors to come to within four at 23-19 and again at 24-21, but a kill by Carly Fleming ended the PC rally.
PC and Radford made it a close second set with 11 ties and six lead changes. Neither team held more than a three point lead the entire set. The last tie of the set came at 20-20 after PC had rallied from a 20-17 deficit off two Blue Hose kills and a Radford error. PC even used a kill by Presley Mabrey to take a 21-20 lead before three Blue Hose errors and a Radford kill gave the Highlanders the 24-21 lead. Andrea Barman made it a two-point affair with a kill but Jesse Miedema responded with a kill of her own to give Radford the 25-22 second set win.
After a close start to the thrid set the Highlanders took a 3-3 tie and used a 10-2 run to take a 13-5 lead. Radford continued its dominance of the set, building a 22-9 before PC broke into the double-digit column with a kill by Allison Brown. Caroline Cann would cut the margin to 22-11 with a kill of her own but that would be as close as it would get as Radford won the next three of four points to take the 25-12 set and 3-0 match wins.
Leading in kills for the Blue Hose were Brown and Cann with eight apiece. Ashtin Frank paced the team in assists with 26 and digs with eight. PC totaled 35 kills and 22 errors for a .125 hitting percentage.
Radford was led by Carly Fleming with nine kills, with Rachel Brummitt and Emily Carlin pacing defensively with 10 digs apiece. The Highlanders posted a .306 hitting percentage off 36 kills and just 10 errors.
PC stays at home for its next match as the Blue Hose take on Liberty at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in Templeton Arena.
