CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's soccer team dropped a Big South Conference match to Liberty on Thursday night, 2-0.
PC moves to 3-13-2 on the year and 1-6-2 in the Big South. Liberty improves to 7-7-3 and 4-4-1 in league play.
The Flames scored twice in the first half en route to the win.
PC tallied three of its four overall shots on goal in the second stanza as the Blue Hose offense applied pressure. Four different members of the Blue Hose registered shots on goal and Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) and Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) led the squad with two shots each.
Goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson (Grayson, Ga.) made five saves in the effort.
PC posted nine shots to Liberty's 10 and each team earned three corner kicks.
Liberty struck quickly, scoring 6:18 after the opening whistle. Emily Hoy got free outside the goal box and fired a ball across the box into the upper left corner to give the Flames an early 1-0 lead.
Rebecca Miller (Pauline, S.C.) attempted to answer shortly after the goal with PC's first test of Liberty goalkeeper Karen Blocker in the 11th minute. Keri O'Neill (Peachtree City, Ga.) also fired an attempt at an equalizer that went just wide.
The Flames found the net again in the 34th minute. Helena Pereira jumped into a PC clearance and deflected the ball back into the open net to extend Liberty's lead to 2-0.
Anderson made two saves for the Blue Hose in a scoreless second half as the PC attack looked to close the gap.
Allen contributed two of PC's best chances of the match on free kicks deep in the Liberty end. Her first shot sailed inches wide of the post and Blocker made a save on the second, a hard, low shot headed for the right corner of the goal.
Gracie Boswell (Simpsonville, S.C.) fired a shot on Blocker in the 63rd minute and Simpson followed with a chance in the 69th, but neither could give PC its first goal of the night as Liberty took home the win, 2-1.
PC returns to Edens Field at Martin Stadium on Saturday night for the squad's season finale against High Point. The Blue Hose will honor seniors Anderson, Jessica Kramer (Acworth, Ga.), Morgan Fragapane and Lauren Snyder (North Augusta, S.C.) before the match's 7 p.m. kickoff.
