Cold First Half Dooms Blue Hose, Fall 61-41 to Chanticleers

Coastal Carolina broke open a 13-13 tie midway through the first half with a 22-2 run, which included four straight three pointers by Desmond Holloway, to take the 61-41 win over the Presbyterian College men's basketball team in front of 778 fans tonight at the Templeton Center in Clinton, S.C.

The first 12-and-a-half minutes of the game saw three ties as both teams traded baskets in an offensive struggle.  Down 11-5 with 12:11 remaining in the half, the Blue Hose (10-16, 4-10) had back-to-back three-pointers by Walt Allen (London, Ky.) and outscored the Chanticleers (23-2, 14-0) 8-2, tying the game for the third and final time at 13-13, with 8:29 on the clock.

PC's shooting went cold the rest of the half, as the Blue Hose didn't score another basket, suffering through a 22-2 run by Coastal Carolina to head into the locker room down by 20, 35-15.  Holloway led the Chanticleers during the stretch, going a perfect four-for-four from beyond the three-point line for his team-leading 16 points of the half.  Coastal Carolina, after struggling from the field early, found its rhythm late, connecting on 14-of-27 shots for 51.9 percent in the half.  PC was just five-of 25 for 20.0 percent.

The Blue Hose, led by two three-pointers from Allen, opened the second half with a 17-4 run, cutting the margin to seven, 32-39, with 13:50 remaining.  CCU responded with an 11-2 run over the next four minutes to build the margin back up to double-digits and led 50-34 with 10:12 to go.  PC would get no closer than 12 the remainder of the game as the Chanticleers won their 21st game in a row with the final 61-41 score.

Leading the Blue Hose was Allen with 15 points.  Pierre Miller (Warner Robbins, Ga.) fell just short of his first career double-double with nine points and a team-leading nine rebounds.  CCU was led by Holloway with 23 points and 14 rebounds.  Chad Gray followed with 20 points on the night.

Presbyterian College improved its shooting in the second half with 34.6 to finish the game with 27.5 percent.  CCU was 46.2 percent from the field for the game.  The Blue Hose connected on eight-of-17 three-pointers, compared to a six-for-20 effort by the Chanticleers.  The Chanticleers out-rebounded the Blue Hose 41-26 and had one more turnover, 13-12.

The Blue Hose next host the Charleston Southern Bucs Saturday, Feb 12th, in a 7 p.m. game at the Templeton Center.
