CLINTON, S.C.-The PC men's tennis team fought to the wire
against Wofford but the doubles point proved crucial again as the Blue Hose
fell 4-3 to the visiting Terriers. PC
battled through doubles play and equaled Wofford in points in singles, but the
Terriers earned the doubles point that proved to be the deciding factor in the
match.
Wofford won at the number one doubles spot, but Edward
Snead (Greenwood, S.C.) and Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.) took the number
three spot with a 9-8 win. At number two
doubles, Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) and Nathan Crocker (Clinton, S.C.) fell
just short, losing 9-8 and enabling Wofford to take the doubles point.
The teams split the first two singles points, with
Wofford winning at number one and Asis taking a 6-1, 6-4 victory at number
five. The Terriers then took the next
two points with wins at the number four and three spots, but the Blue Hose
continued to fight and won the last two spots.
Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) and Sprouse each earned a point for PC to
give each team three points apiece, but the doubles point again proved the
deciding factor as Wofford came away with the 4-3 match win.
"It was an absolute dogfight today," said head coach
Patric Hynes. "I am proud of my team's
never say die attitude. We didn't lose because
of a lack of character; we just need to be involved in these kind of matches
especially with such a young team. We
will learn from this and be a better team for it."
PC remains at home for the next match against Georgia
State on Sunday, Feb. 20. Match time is
scheduled for 1 p.m.
