Men's Tennis Rallies to Beat UNC Charlotte 4-3

CHARLOTTE, N.C.-The Presbyterian College men's tennis team rallied behind Grayson's Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) victory at the number one singles spot to record a 4-3 victory over UNC Charlotte.  With the score tied 3-3 entering the last match, Mills battled back from an 0-5 deficit in the third set to win 7-5 and give PC the winning point.

The Blue Hose trailed after doubles play 0-1, as UNC Charlotte took the point with an 8-3 win at number one and an 8-0 victory at number two.

PC trailed by a point entering singles play, and Gonzalo Asis (Madrid, Spain) earned a point at number five singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win.  After Charlotte took the number four and number three singles spots, the Blue Hose fought to tie the score with wins at number six and number three.  Zachary Sprouse (Hilton Head, S.C.) won 6-4, 7-5 at number six and Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) came up big with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 victory at number three to tie the overall match score at 3-3.

With the number one singles spot as the deciding match, Mills lost the first set 2-6 but took the second 7-5.  He trailed 0-5 to start the third set, but rallied for a huge comeback and won the set and match with a 7-5 score.  The win gave PC the final point and they came out with the 4-3 victory over UNC Charlotte.

"This was the craziest match I've ever been a part of," said head coach Patric Hynes after play concluded.  "To watch us come back from being down after doubles, then trailing 3-1 in singles, shows the character of this team.  For Grayson to come back from 0-5 in the third set of the deciding match was an enormous effort.  The other guys who won probably don't get as much recognition, but their wins were just as important.  This was a big step in the right direction for such a young team."

The Blue Hose advance to 10-7 on the season with the victory.  They return to action on Saturday, March 19 when they host East Carolina at 10 a.m.  The match starts a three game home stretch for PC.
