CLINTON, S.C. - The Presbyterian College women's soccer team (1-10-0, 1-3-0 Big South) heads to North Carolina to battle High Point (3-4-6, 2-0-2) on Thursday and Campbell (7-3-1, 2-0-2) on Saturday. The Blue Hose look to make a statement against two teams among the league's top half after cruising past VMI on Saturday afternoon, 4-1.
High Point enters the week wtih a 3-4-6 overall record but an unbeaten 2-0-2 record in Big South Conference play. The Panthers tied Winthrop (3-3) and topped Gardner-Webb (2-1) in double overtime, the seventh double overtime match for High Point this season. The Panthers lead the league in shots and Becca Hemby ranks second in the league in points (16) thanks to seven goals and two assists.
Campbell hosts UNC Asheville before PC visits Buies Creek on Saturday. The Camels check in with the fifth spot in the league after a 2-2-0 record following a 3-1 victory over Gardner-Webb and a 1-0 overtime loss to Winthrop. Ashley Clark leads the Big South with nine goals and two assists for 20 points, averaging a league-high five shots per game. Ryann Torrero has played all 11 matches in net for the Camels.
The Blue Hose stand tied in both series, matching High Point with a 3-3-1 record and Campbell with a 1-1-1 tally. PC shut out High Point, 1-0, in the 2011 season finale and battled to a 2-2 draw last season against the Camels. Sara Simpson scored the clinching goal against the Panthers and Emily Boggus contributed a goal against the Camels.
Tori Lopez took the team lead in goals (four) and points (nine) with her two-goal, one-assist performance Saturday against VMI. Freshman goalkeeper Sydney Fontenot picked up her first collegiate win and PC's first this season while Jordan Broadway's 2.11 goals against average and 48 saves pace the netminding duo.
PC picked up its first win of 2012 in convincing fashion, knocking off VMI by a 4-1 margin on Saturday. The Blue Hose scored two goals in the first 4:40 as Sara Simpson and Tori Lopez put the Keydets behind early, one of two Lopez goals on the day. Fontenot made five saves in her first career start to earn her first win.
The Blue Hose come back to Laurens County to host Charleston Southern on October 11 before wrapping up the road portion of the regular season on October 13 with a morning contest against Coastal Carolina.
