Al'Lonzo Coleman scored 23 points, while Khalid Mutakabbir added 21, as the Presbyterian College men's basketball team broke open a 30-30 halftime tie with 47 points in the second, taking the 77-64 win over Radford in action tonight at the Dedmon Center in Radford, Va.
With the win PC improves to 13-15 overall and 7-10 in the Big South. The 13 wins tie PC's Division I era win total. Radford drops to 6-24, 2-15.
After trading baskets to open the second half, the Blue Hose took their first lead of the game off an Eric Washington basket to go up 34-32 with 17:27 remaining. PC extended the lead to 44-35 after outscoring the Highlanders 14-5 in the first four-and-a-half minutes of the second half, capped by a three-pointer by Josh Johnson at 15:37.
Radford cut the margin to six with 12:33 left before Coleman's jumper at 12:06 and a free throw at 11:34 gave PC the nine-point lead again, 50-41.
PC's first double-digit lead came the very next basket after Mutakabbir hit a three-pointer from the left side to make it 53-41 with 10:36 to go. It was short-lived as Radford hit a three and a jumper as part of a 5-0 run to make it a seven-point game, 53-46.
Coleman made it a 10-point game again, 56-46 with 9:01 on the clock, after he hit a jumper and the free throw after he was fouled on the shot.
Both teams swapped points the next couple of minutes and with 7:15 left in the game, PC led 60-50.
Radford rallied to cut the lead to eight, 64-56, with 4:26 remaining off two free throws by Johnathan Edwards and to seven, 68-61, with a three-pointer by R.J. Price at 3:05. It was part of a 9-4 run that saw PC's 12-point 64-52 lead erased.
PC ended the rally, scoring the game's final nine of 12 points, going nine-of-10 from the free throw line to take the 77-64 win.
Radford led 10-3 early in the game, before Coleman, who scored PC's first seven points, hit back-to-back field goals to cut the Highlander lead to just three, 10-7 with 15:01 to go in the half. A basket by Javonte Green took the Radford lead back up to five at the 14:19 mark, however.
Down 11-14, Mutakabbir hit a three pointer from the top of the key to tie the game at 14-14 with 12:09 to go before intermission. Radford hit two free throws a minute later to re-take the lead.
The Highlanders scored six unanswered to increase their lead to 20-14 with 9:53 on the clock before Pierre Miller ended the drought with a three-pointer to cut the lead to three with 8:29 to go in the first.
Radford extended its lead to seven, the largest of the half, using a 10-3 run over a six minute stretch and led 24-17 with 6:39 to go.
PC rebounded with an 11-4 run, highlighted by four points from Miller and five by Coleman, to tie the game for the second time at 28-28 with 1:48 left in the half. Both teams traded points the remainder of the half and PC and Radford went into the locker room tied 30-30.
Following Coleman and Mutakabbir with their 23 and 21 points, respectively, was Washington with 14. Coleman led the team with 10 rebounds as part of his 10th double-double of the season. Josh Clyburn was strong on the boards with eight rebounds, all defensive.
Radford was led by Tolga Cerrah with 14 points. Green paced the team in rebounds with five.
PC shot over 50 percent for the ninth time this season with 55.8, while Radford shot 42.6. The Blue Hose held the 35-20 rebounding advantage. Of the 35 boards, 24 of them were on the defensive end.
PC hit 25 free throws, just one shy of its season-high, compared to 12 by Radford. The Highlanders had eight less turnovers, 12-20 and one less steal, 4-5.
