Women's Soccer Drops Big South Opener at Liberty

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team dropped its Big South Conference opener on Thursday night, falling to Liberty by a 5-1 score.

PC moves to 0-8-0 on the year and begins league action at 0-1-0 while Liberty improves to 7-3-0 and 1-0-0 in Big South play.

Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) scored her first goal of the season with a first half tally. Trailing 2-1, the Blue Hose cut the lead in half when Simpson collected a loose ball in the box and fired a shot into the left corner to pull PC within one in the 27th minute. Simpson, the team's leading scorer last season as a sophomore, provided all of the team's three shots on goal.

Liberty struck quickly as Brittany Aanderud scored 52 seconds after the opening whistle. Rebekah Page then put the Flames up by a pair with a goal in the 13th minute, chipping a lofty shot over PC goalkeeper Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) for the goal.

Heather Bentley scored shortly before halftime to give Liberty a 3-1 lead heading into the break.

The Flames added two goals in the second half. Helena Pereira first scored on a penalty kick in the 68th minute before Jaime Bouffard finished off a Maddie Boonie less than four minutes later.

Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas) took over for Broadway in the 77th minute and made three saves without allowing a goal.

The Blue Hose stay in Virginia for their next match, a Saturday Big South Conference tilt at Longwood. The opening whistle is slated for 2 p.m.
