COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's tennis team
came up short in its spring season opener on Saturday, falling to No. 39 South
Carolina, 4-0.
PC moves to 2-1 on the year while South Carolina improves to
2-0. The Blue Hose next hosts Troy on Friday afternoon at 2 p.m.
South Carolina snatched the doubles point to start the
match. Tsvetan Mihov and Chip Cox pushed
past Rafael Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and Grayson Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) at
No. 1, 8-1, while Harry Menzies and Kyle Koch held off Gonzalo Asis (Madrid,
Spain) and Andrew Brigham (Birmingham, England), 8-2.
Edward Snead IV (Greenwood, S.C.) and Nathan Crocker (Clinton,
S.C.) cut their deficit against Ben Barnette and Thiago Pinheiro to 6-3 after
trailing 2-2 before the Gamecocks' doubles point ended the match early.
In singles action, Mihov pushed past Mills at the top
flight, 6-2, 6-1. Cox knocked off Berghaus, 6-2, 6-2, while Koch handled
Brigham in a tough match at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4.
Freshman Danny Bruce (Marietta, Ga.) made his spring debut
against Pinheiro, but the match ended before the two could play to a result. The
Blue Hose newcomer dropped the first set, 6-3, before recovering and leading
3-2 in the second.
