CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College men's soccer team pulled even with 7:16 to go in its Sunday Homecoming matchup against the Radford Highlanders on Sunday afternoon, but a late Radford goal proved enough to edge the Blue Hose, 3-2.
PC moves to 3-11-0 on the year and 1-6-0 in the Big South Conference. The Blue Hose next embark on three-game road swing that begins on Wednesday at Wofford at 7 p.m. Radford improves to 5-5-4 and 2-2-2 in the Big South and will next host VMI on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Radford used a pair of penalty kick goals in the second half en route to the win. Ignacio Monchetti (Montevideo, Uruguay) scored both of PC's goals.
With PC trailing 2-0 midway through the second half, Monchetti broke through twice to tie the match. The first goal came in the 66th minute when Josh Carter (Anchorage, Alaska) sprinted down the left side in front of the PC bench and lifted a cross to the far end of the goal box, finding Monchetti. The junior angled the ball into the right side for his fifth of the season and PC's first of the game in the 66th minute.
Monchetti tied the match in the 83rd minute thanks to a long throw-in from Cade Crow (Liberty, Mo.). Crow's threw the ball to the back post and Monchetti did the rest, lacing a chance into the left side to make it 2-2.
Unfortunately for PC, a penalty kick 36 seconds proved to be the deciding factor. A challenge in the goal box set up Joe Mayer for the Highlanders' third goal of the game and the eventual game-winner.
Bernarndo Ulmo scored the game's first goal in the 20th minute. Luis Grande and Sergio Arzubiaga played the ball in the air through the goal box to find Ulmo, who slammed a shot off the underside of the crossbar to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Ulmo scored his second of the game shortly after halftime. A collision in the goal box gave the Highlanders a penalty kick that Ulmo converted, tucking a shot into the lower left corner to put the the visitors ahead in the 53rd minute, 2-0.
Monchetti led PC with five shots and three on goal. Ian Dempsey (Madison, Ala.) and Jordan Archer (Charlotte, N.C.) each tallied a shot on goal as well. PC goalkeeper Tyler Beadle (Douglasville, Ga.) made four saves in the effort.
Ulmo took five of Radford's shots to lead the team in that category, including three on goal. Goalkeeper Dane Wilson stopped three shots for the win.
