CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team dropped a Big South Conference match in heartbreaker on Saturday night as the visiting Liberty Flames used a Brittany Aanderud penalty kick in double overtime to take the win, 2-1.
PC moves to 5-5-0 on the year and 2-2-0 in the Big South Conference. The Blue Hose stay at home for their second of four straight home matches when they host Coastal Carolina on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Liberty improves to 8-3-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the league action and the Flames will host Radford on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
Aanderud scored both of Liberty's goals en route to the victory. With 5:26 remaining in double overtime, a PC foul in the goal box and a pair of yellow cards issued to the Blue Hose gave the Flames a penalty kick. Despite Sydney Fontenot (Austin, Texas) guessing correctly which side to dive on the save attempt, Aanderud's shot found the back of the net and Liberty came away with the win.
Aanderud opened the scoring with 44 seconds left in the first half to give the Flames a 1-0 lead at the break.
Down 1-0 in the second half, Sara Simpson (Columbia, S.C.) delivered the equalizer for the Blue Hose. Stephanie Allen (Augusta, Ga.) launched a corner kick into the box that Simpson headed in to pull the home side even, 1-1. The goal marked Simpson's third of the season and Allen's team-leading third assist.
Liberty outshot the Blue Hose overall, 23-11, but PC tallied eight shots in the second half as the attack pushed to score. PC also registered eight shots on goal to Liberty's 13.
Jordan Broadway (Chapin, S.C.) made four saves in the opening half before Sydney Fontenot entered for the second half. Fontenot made seven saves in the remaining 59:34.
Simpson and Keri O'Neill (Peachtree City, Ga.) each took a team-leading two shots for the Blue Hose.
Liberty's Holly Van Noord stopped seven shots on the night.
