CLINTON, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's soccer team defeated Liberty for the first time in program history in a 2-0 clean sheet Wednesday night at Martin Stadium.
By collecting more than three saves, Sydney Fontenot became the third all-time saves leader in PC history.
The Blue Hose took down the pre-season Big South Conference favorite and went to 6-6-0, 2-2-0 in the conference, while the Flames dropped their first conference match of the season and went to 6-6-1, 4-1-1.
The Blue Hose netted both goals in the second half. Frances Whitesides (Lancaster, S.C.) scored her first goal of the season in the 64th minute. Stephanie Lee (Suwanee, Ga.) chipped the ball over the back line of the defense, while Whitesides outran the defenders and beat the keeper on the left side of the goal.
The Blue Hose struck again in the 66th minute off a header from Hannah Gaither (Statesville, N.C.) for her fourth goal of the year. Sophie Cobb (Columbia, S.C.) sent a cross from the right side into the 18-yard box that Gaither got on the other end of and finished to give PC and insurance goal.
The Flames outshot the Blue Hose 17-11 and put nine shots on frame, while PC put eight.
Fontenot (Austin, Texas) gathered nine saves in the clean bill for the Blue Hose. Fontenot's 206 career saves puts her in third place all-time, eight saves behind second place.
Presbyterian hosts Campbell for the second game of a three-game home stand 2 p.m. Saturday at Martin Stadium.
