CLINTON, S.C.- The Presbyterian College men's tennis team held off a late push by a tough USC Upstate team, 4-3, on Wednesday night at the Templeton Tennis Courts.
PC gets its tenth win of the year as the team improves to 10-1. The Spartans fall to 0-6 on the year.
Ryan Miller (Norcross, Ga.) and Ben Kelley (Weaverville, N.C.) earned an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to start the evening for the Blue Hose. Shortly after, Brandon Mills (Lilburn, Ga.) and Lukas Lukemeier (Greven, Germany) clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 at No. 3 to put PC up 1-0 heading into singles play.
The talented freshman Alejandro Bejar (Madrid, Spain) improved to 9-0 on the year with a dominating 6-2, 6-0 win over Rajanvir Dharni at No. 5 singles to put the Blue Hose up 2-0.
Miller dropped his match at No. 1 singles to Ramon Simonetti, 2-6, 1-6 to pull the Spartans within one point of the hosts, 2-1.
Kelley got a big win for PC at No. 4 singles over Ignacio Garrido, 6-3, 6-3 to extend the Blue Hose lead to 3-1.
Sophomore Diego Manzanas (Madrid, Spain) clinched the win for the Blue Hose with an exciting 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 3 to improve to 8-0 on the year.
PC dropped the final two matches of the night, though, as Viktor Selander beat Alexander Lykou (Aarhus, Denmark), 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 and Matt Bennion defeated Mills in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2.
The Blue Hose will travel to Elon for a 2 p.m. match on Saturday afternoon.
