BUIES CREEK, N.C. – The Presbyterian College men's tennis team fell to Campbell, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Nisbet Tennis Center in the Big South opener for the Blue Hose. PC falls to a conference opponent for just the fifth time since 2016, while Campbell improved to 3-0 against league opponents this season.
“Great effort from the Blue Boys today and a fantastic college tennis match,” head coach Patrick Fediuk said. “We have clipped Campbell 4-3 the last couple times and this time it was their turn. We are competing hard and are representing PC with class and pride. We will be back to work on Monday for a great week!”
The Camels took the opening lead with a sweep of doubles play to go up 1-0. CU recorded a 6-4 win at No. 1, 6-2 win at No. 2 and 6-2 win at No. 3 to take the early lead.
The two would split the six singles matches. CU's Lorenz Schwab made it 2-0 with a win at No. 2 but Alexander Lykou got PC on the board with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1 to start conference play at 1-0. After a CU win at No. 6, Jaime Castillo-Lopez recorded a three-set win at No. 4, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, making it 3-2 with two matches to go.
The remaining two matches would both be decided in three sets. Alejandro Bejar took the opening set at No. 3, 6-1, but CU's Dustin Werner managed to claim the second, 7-5, and the third, 6-3, to take the match and clinch the victory. PC's Daniel Stenger capped it off with a 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 win at No. 5 to make it a 4-3.
The Blue Hose return to action on Tuesday, traveling to UNC Asheville for a match at 3 p.m.
