CLINTON, S.C. – Capturing the match's first four falls to give them more than enough leeway for a decisive victory in front of a rowdy Templeton Center audience, the Presbyterian College women's wrestling squad dispelled Mount Olive on Sunday afternoon by a 37-10 margin, the second straight bout in which head coach Zach Shaeffer's lineup posted a 25+ point differential in dual competition.
Moving to 2-1 in head-to-head play beside a wealth of impressive performances in two tournaments earlier this month, the sixth-ranked Blue Hose handed the Trojans their first defeat in three outings at the tail end of the weekend, taking eight out of the 10 standard matches on their home base with a couple of exhibition W's for added significance. Over the team's last two dual showings, Presbyterian has scooped up 16 total victories, sending their 2022 win accumulation to 57 after five events.
Next to a pair of UMO forfeits, coach Shaeffer's group had little trouble building their second blowout result of the past two weeks.
Samantha Miller and Catherine "CG" Bertrand gifted the Blue Hose their first pinfall decisions of the first-time matchup, totaling only one minute and five seconds to increase PC's already-large advantage.
Ainslie Lane – ranked fourth among all 116-lb. competitors in the nation – returned to Presbyterian's lineup for her second contact victory in dual play (winning via forfeit in the team's last meeting against Limestone in Gaffney), besting Gracie Cordasco as part of PC's four-point streak. Once Mount Olive gained their lone grappling win of the afternoon in the 130-lb. weight class, the hometown side made it a one-and-done occurrence by grabbing the next four bouts to put the meet out of reach.
Freshman sensation
Paige Wehrmeister continued her fall reign of terror by recording her 10
th individual win in a row, getting the better of Skylear Smith in the 143-lb. tussle to stay undefeated on the year. Fellow underclassman
Gabriella Shevlin immediately picked up her first W since the Princeton Open in the ensuing match, vanquishing Isabella Kessey to keep the downpour going.
Isabella Badon – a senior who has performed exclusively in dual affairs thus far – tallied her second consecutive triumph atop Aleksandra Bieszczad to put a bow on PC's authoritative win, paving the way for
Cassandra Lopez and
Sierra Marie Miller to officially end the day with back-to-back exhibition successes, allowed to compete in bonus play on account of UMO's aforementioned forfeits.
When taking into account a 41-10 bashing against Limestone 14 days prior, the Blue Hose have now published their last two victories by a combined clip of 78-20, marking the fourth time in the program's young history that they have achieved consecutive W's in one-on-one confrontations.
The added-up personal record of Presbyterian's four nationally-ranked wrestlers (both Miller's, Wehrmeister, and Lane) is now locked at 33-5, not to mention 14 additional wins by Lopez and Bertrand, flexing their collective muscles as the season divulges into three key tournaments that will unravel into the new calendar year.
