CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Now that the 2023 women's soccer campaign has witnessed its final bow, the Big South Conference has released its annual regular-season awards slate ahead of the league tournament this weekend. Presbyterian College was represented by Lina-Marie Müller on the all-Big South second team and all-freshman roster, while
Sloan Spees garnered an Honorable Mention plaudit and
Kelly Hall was the squad's rep for the all-academic lineup.
Simultaneously the school's eighth-ever selection for both all-second team and all-freshman as a redshirt, Müller published a team-best 12 points for a roster that found a pair of league W's and two ties over its final three appearances.
Spees – who sat right where Müller did at this point in 2022 with an all-freshman credit – posted 10 points of her own as the Blue Hose's leading goal-getter in her second go-around (five).
Meanwhile, Hall's perfect grade-point average from a year ago was maintained which allowed PC's keeper to hit all-academic status for the second-straight time.
Presbyterian's four all-conference accolades are the second-most from the team since the program made the jump to the NCAA's Division I ranks in 2007, only one shy of the 2013 team that clocked in with five such distinctions.
Head coach
Brian Purcell finishes his 35
th season as PC's director, responsible for all 77 of Presby's victories since joining the Big South 16 years back.
Lina-Marie Müller – All-Big South Second Team + All-Big South Freshman Team
- Drawing up six assists on her first full year of competition (after redshirting in '22 due to injury), PC's international star achieved nine of her 12 points against conference opponents. She contributed at least one point in three straight Big South dates earlier this month, recording a trio of helpers in consecutive wins over Gardner-Webb and Winthrop.
- A native of Schriesheim, Germany, Müller logged her first career strike in a road setting versus Jacksonville (September 3, a contest where she later added her first assist nine minutes later).
- Finding the back of the net in the conference opener at Radford, she'd do the same in Presbyterian's last bout of the semester during a head-to-head with Longwood, securing the team's 12
th and final goal in the 17
th minute.
- One of six players conference-wide to tally two assists in a sole match this fall (the aforementioned G-W victory), Müller's six dishes in 2023 are the second-most over a full season across PC's D-I past and one less than Peyton Robinette's seven in 2018.
- Lina-Marie catalogued 986 minutes altogether – the second-most of any newcomer on Purcell's club – finding over 56% of her shot attempts on-target.
- Müller becomes the fourth player in Blue Hose history to obtain two separate postseason Big South awards, joining the company of Rachel Lamb (2008), Sophie Cobb (2015), and Kelsey Yeager (2018).
Sloan Spees – All-Big South Honorable Mention
- Going two-for-two in her collegiate career in terms of all-conference recognition, Spees' five strikes (fourth in the division) have landed as a worthy sequel to her all-freshman bid last October. The game-winner in both the Gardner-Webb and Winthrop tussles came from the Georgia product's foot.
- With half of her Blue Hose tenure in the books, Spees has now reached double-digits in the goals department (10), good enough to place fifth among all players throughout PC's Big South history.
- Sloan has registered a career shot-on-goal measurement of .457 after logging four of her five goals this year in conference territory. She was the beneficiary to each of Müller's assists in the wins against the Runnin' Bulldogs and Eagles, later contributing a final score versus Charleston Southern (October 18).
Kelly Hall – Big South All-Academic Team
- For the second straight calendar, Hall represents the Blue Hose on the all-league academic roster behind a flawless 4.0 GPA. Majoring in Business Administration with a double concentration in Accounting and Marketing (plus a Spanish minor for good measure), she becomes the third player in PC history to land the award in multiple years next to Rachel Lamb (2008-09), Emily Boggus (2011-13), and Caroline Dipzinski (2020-21).
- With five personal victories to her name, Kelly engineered a 2023 campaign with over 1,200 minutes in the keeper's box and 15 starts at that position. Logging 25 saves over her final three appearances in league action, the Georgia native has now published 148 stoppages since her debut year (good for fourth place in PC's D-I record books).
- Holding a career save percentage of .725 – also fourth place in the annals of Blue Hose soccer – Hall has received numerous accolades for her performances in the classroom, including a two-time membership on the conference's Presidential Honor Roll, a Presby Dean's List member in four straight semesters, and an inclusion on the 2022 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District squad.
