Historic Four-Way On Deck for Women’s Wrestling in Iowa City

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Front and center during a first-of-its kind attraction at the tail end of this weekend, the 13th-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team will undergo three consecutive duals in the Midwest on Sunday afternoon. The Sacred Heart Pioneers, Lindenwood Lions, and Iowa Hawkeyes will all do battle with PC in a multi-team event that will feature a quartet of NWCA top 15 programs.

Signifying a major early-season test for a squad that came in ninth-place nationally at last season's end, the Blue Hose's venture to Iowa City in 48 hours will entail three head-to-head meetings against opponents they've never previously gone up against in a dual setting.

As a preamble to Sunday's madness, head coach Brian Vutianitis' group unscrewed the lid off of a brand-new campaign by totaling 22 wins between eight grapplers at the Princeton Open in New Jersey.

With that tourney in the rearview, the focus shifts to three nationally-ranked foes in quick succession. The action will begin at 11:00 AM central time in the second of three weekends in a row that Presby will hit the mats.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

- The Blue Hose will deal with the hosting party right out of the gates at the event, starting and later ending the trio against an NWCA top-ten club. Iowa will be the first to joust against PC, enjoying the luxury of home base after toppling seventh-ranked East Stroudsburg in dominant fashion last weekend by a 43-1 difference.

- Following a short intermission in between each affair, Presbyterian will keep up the intensity with two other opponents who have aspirations of a National Championship, battling Lindenwood and Sacred Heart consecutively.

- In an interesting coincidence, the NCWWC title bracket will also be held in the state of Iowa – taking place in Cedar Rapids – meaning that Sunday's three-parter could provide a succinct appetizer for what's later to come in the postseason come March.

LAST TIME OUT

- A significant chunk of Presby's lineup at the aforementioned Princeton Open suited up in blue and garnet gear for the very first time, sporting six newcomers out of eight submissions to the same tourney that the squad dominated in 2022.

- Many positive first impressions were made from Vutianitis' crew, most impressively a 2nd-place medal by true freshman Henlee Haynes that was acquired thanks to three wins in a row from the get-go.

- Haynes took down her first two foes in a combined 1:31, grabbing a second pin in the 170-lb. semi's. Junior transfer Chiara Barbieri (101) posted an identical mark of 3-1 that put her in the bronze label behind a couple of pins on the consolation side.

- Three other Blue Hose members assembled a top-five finish in the northeast, including another fresh face to the program in Alyssa Mahan (123). Sophomore Ella Beam mirrored that 4th-place effort with back-to-back pins, while Paige Wehrmeister (the second-ranked wrestler in class 136 nationwide) published a 4-2 performance that earned her 5th place.
