EMORY, Va. – Corralling 16 pins, 11 technical falls, and 27 victories spread out between nine entrees, the 13
th-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling program snatched the spotlight at the Wasp Open for the second straight season en route to an as-expected scorcher in the Commonwealth State on Friday afternoon.
Held at Emory & Henry, the Blue Hose cast more than one eye-opener as a signifier to the talent level of their young core.
Charlee Shuler (116),
Madeline Kubicki (143),
Henlee Haynes (170), and
Ella Beam (191) never lost a single bout amongst them as they all climbed to a 1
st-place crown in their respective divisions.
Not to be outdone, head coach
Brian Vutianitis' squad continued to spread around the wealth by posting a 2
nd-place mark courtesy of
Reagan Riddick and reigning Adidas / Game One Student-Athlete of the Week
Cassia Zammit.
109-pounder
Grace York and Haynes' 170 mate
Ta'Niya Roberts published bronze finishes in their own right, enabling Presby to showcase a tournament performance with their fingerprints littered all over its final results.
Serving as a perfect preamble to the Midlands Championships – a famed bracket in Chicago that will include the Blue Hose on December 30 – all nine of PC's grapplers took a W in their first matchup of the day and proceeded to channel that momentum towards a splendid finish in Virginia.
NOTABLES
- The four who earned a top prize combined for a 16-0 record in the same event where similar good fortune occurred in 2022, emerging with six falls and eight tech's between that ensemble alone. Overall, Presbyterian picked up nearly 70 percent of their pins in under one minute as they steamrolled their way to another thumbs-up effort.
- Further emphasizing how deep Vutianitis' roster is, the 116 and 170-lb. groups featured a contest between two Blue Hose competitors against each other (Shuler vs. Riddick and Haynes vs. Roberts).
- Six of the eight attendees offered up a win streak that reached at minimum three duals, hoisting PC to 10 top-three placements in only two tournaments at this point on the calendar.

UP NEXT
- An event that is immediately circled by any squad who submits to their name to the field, the 2023 Midlands Championships from the Windy City will await Presbyterian's arrival on the second-to-last day of the year.
- Three PC performers took a third-place nod at the event last December, including 136-pounder
Paige Wehrmeister on her way to a phenomenal 38-5 record as a then-freshman. In a dramatic shift of pace, however, it will be decreed that every one of the team's participants this time out will be competing on that grand stage for the very first time.
