Blue Hose in Huntingdon for Friday Duals, Saturday Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The road warrior status of the seventh-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team continues this weekend for a set of duals and tournament play within 24 hours of each other, traveling to Huntingdon for their first action of the new year.

Fresh off of 18 total victories at the famed Midlands Championships in Chicago earlier this week, the Blue Hose and head coach Brian Vutianitis will enter a dual for the first time in nearly a full month on Friday.

PC is scheduled to face Huntingdon and Texas Women's University in a three-team pool that starts at 1:00 eastern time, likely to also wrestle Lindsey Wilson or Central Methodist later in the day.

Once the round robin event tomorrow is complete, the Scotsmen will be back in the brackets for their fifth tourney of the campaign. They've seen massive amounts of success when in a tournament setting, bringing home 17 first-place medals since November alone.

RECAP AT MIDLANDS

- For the third consecutive December, Presbyterian was a fixture in the Midlands Championships where they met some of the most elite competition in the nation. The result: an individual title for freshman May Cuyler, her fourth already with the season just two months old.

- Cuyler boosted her tournament record to 15-0 in the Windy City by earning two technical's and a pin, winning the championship clash over North Central's Tiera Jimerson via 10-7 standard decision.

- Three of PC's eight entrees were able to finish in the top five of their respective weight class, as fellow freshman Carina Giangeruso snared bronze and second-year 124-pounder Alyssa Mahan collected 5th.

- Coach V's unit matched their overall win count from the 2023 edition of Midlands (18), as five Presby wrestlers had their hand raised more than once.

UNDERCLASSMEN OVERACHIEVING

- As was the case for the majority of last spring, the batch of freshmen and sophomores for the Blue Hose has been tremendously effective. Cuyler and Giangeruso now have 30 combined wins and just three defeats, pinning 14 opponents thus far.

- PC has remained inside the NWCA top ten since the preseason poll was announced in late October, partially due to the rapid growth of those first and second-year athletes.

- Although unable to compete at Midlands, rookie Chloe Dearwester (110) has still yet to take a loss with a 9-0 record, last seen in a dual versus #3 King on December 10 where she knocked off a nationally-ranked foe with a 65-second fall.

- Another scratch in Chi-town, sophomore Cassia Zammit remains one of the fiercest wrestlers in her 131-lb. class, winning her first 10 matches of the winter after becoming an All-American at Nationals last March.

- Maddie Kubicki and Henlee Haynes, two of Presbyterian's three freshmen All-Americans from last year, have only been able to suit up once total between them this season due to injury, serving as another reminder of how deep Vutianitis' roster is when fully healthy.
