PC Continues Road Streak with Three Matches on Tap

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Presbyterian College women's tennis team continues their season opening seven-match road streak, with a trip to Lander on Wednesday before heading to Charlotte to face Belmont Abbey and Queens on Friday.

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
- Lander has yet to open their spring slate, although they have competed against Georgia Gwinnett in an exhibition match where they fell 7-0. The squad will face Charleston Southern in another exhibition match before their battle with PC.
- Last year, Lander took a 3-14 record with a 1-5 mark against conference opponents.
- Junior Hannah Panchal returns as the Bearcat's leading singles player from last season's squad, picking up a 13-17 singles record last spring.
- Senior Mille Elsborg recorded the best mark in doubles last season with a 16-12 mark, pairing up with sophomore Maria Jose Zarza in 14 of those outtings.
- The Blue Hose lead the all-time series between the two teams 3-0 after sweeping the Bearcats at home last spring.
 
SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS
- Belmont Abbey opens their spring schedule as hosts to the Blue Hose on Wednesday.
- Last year, the team finished the spring with a 20-11 record, including an impressive 7-2 mark against conference opponents. They advanced to the semifinals of the Conference Carolinas Tournament before falling to first seed Lees-McRae.
- Junior Hanley Riner led the Crusaders in singles last season with a 15-9 overall record.
- Sophomore Mackenzie McCarthy was a close second with a 15-10 singles record.
- Sophomore Leilany Sanchez took the team's best doubles mark last year at 14-7, while senior Elizabeth Vollmin took a 14-8 record.
- Sanchez and Vollmin picked up a 13-6 doubles record while playing together, the best record of any duo on last season's squad.
- The singles standouts, Hanley and Vollmin, paired in doubles where they would see a 13-9 record.
- Last season, the Blue Hose hosted the Crusaders in a double header where PC came away with victories in both matches. Presbyterian leads the all-time series between the two teams 4-0.
 
SCOUTING THE ROYALS
- Queens began their spring slate on Jan. 17 where they lost to Charlotte 5-0.
- Last season, the Royals tallied a 2-21 record while being held winless against conference opponents.
- The Royals lost their top two singles players from last year's roster, but sophomore Lucy Hogan returns as the team's leading singles player with a 2-21 record during the spring of 2024.
- Hogan is also the top returner in doubles, amassing a 3-14 record, although her partners from last year will not return.
- Presbyterian leads the all-time series between the two teams 1-0 after beating Queens 6-1 at home last season.

SCOUTING THE BLAZERS
- UAB began their 2025 spring slate with a match against No. 12 Auburn, falling 6-1.
- Last year, the team took a 13-11 mark with a 1-2 tally against conference opponents.
- Senior Vanessa Mellynchuk is the team's leading returner in single, recording a 17-8 record last spring.
- Mellynchuk also led the team in doubles with a 17-9 tally, pairing up with senior Mackenzie White in 23 of those matches.
 
A LOOK AT THE BLUE HOSE
Presbyterian was picked fourth in the Big South's annual preseason poll after returning five letterwinners from last year's squad and taking in four newcomers to the roster. Last spring, the Blue Hose won 46.3 percent of their total singles matches and 58.6 of their doubles matches. Junior Claudia Sanchez led the team in singles with a 13-6 record including a 4-1 tally against league opponents. McKenzie Davis was not far behind with an 11-9 mark. Sanchez teamed up with Valentina De Sousa in a majority of doubles matches last season where they earned an 8-4 record with a 3-2 mark in conference play. Sanchez, Davis, and De Sousa will all be competing this spring.

SPRING SLATE
Sixth year head coach Joel Roberts and the Blue Hose women's tennis team will compete in 22 matches throughout the spring, seven of which will be played here in Clinton at the Templeton Tennis Courts. In league play, PC will host UNC Asheville on April 2 and Radford on April 12.
