String of Quality Opponents This Week for Women’s Wrestling

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Back in action for the first time in nearly a full month, the #5/7 Presbyterian College women's wrestling team has a loaded 72-hour slate that starts in Las Vegas tomorrow. After a three-way against Albion, Colorado Mesa, and Simon Fraser in Sin City, PC will then dual Frostburg State at a neutral site on Friday.

That matchup with Frostburg is part of the annual "Beast of the East" event, held in Delaware. Results on Wednesday and Friday can be viewed on Flo Wrestling and Track Wrestling, respectively.

Reigning Southeast Region Coach of the Year Brian Vutianitis has engineered a characteristically-strong schedule over the first month-and-a-half of the season, already facing two top-10 foes and ready for two more in the next 24 hours.

Wednesday will be Presby's longest road trip of the year at this point, squaring off with three opponents that have won nine combined duals back-to-back-to-back.

SCOUTING ALBION

- The first-ever meeting between two programs that both created women's wrestling at roughly the same time, PC starts the Vegas triple threat against the Albion Britons who hold a 2-3 record.

- Albion was defeated by Manchester in their last effort (34-12), but was able to place 3rd overall in a self-hosted tournament last month. Jolynn Harris is in the midst of her first year at Albion, taking the job after two seasons as an assistant at Colorado Mesa.

SCOUTING COLORADO MESA

- Speaking of CMU, that is the second matchup for the Blue Hose in what will be a clash between two national-championship contenders. PC has tangled with the Mavericks in each of the past three years, butting heads at the NWCA National Duals on a regular basis.

- Presby squeezed out a 24-20 win over Colorado Mesa last January in Iowa, although the Mavericks remain a power in the sport and are coming off a 4th-place finish at the North Central Invitational on Sunday.

- Travis Mercado has been CMU's lone coach in the team's eight-year history, coming in 4th and 8th at the National Championship Tournament in the past two seasons.

SCOUTING SIMON FRASER

- Like Albion, the Blue Hose will encounter a first-time adversary for round three in Vegas: the 8th-ranked Simon Fraser Red Leafs. Located in British Columbia, Simon Fraser is currently riding a three-match winning steak over Adams State, Texas Woman's, and #24 Schreiner.

- Led by head coach Justin Abdou, the Red Leafs are one of the longest-tenured women's wrestling institutions. They placed 21st at Nationals back in the spring, their only loss this semester in five attempts coming against #11 Fort Hays State.

SCOUTING FROSTBURG STATE

- Frostburg State has entered the NWCA top 25 after a very strong start to their third-ever season, boasting a 6-1 mark and a five-match winning streak.

- PC is a regular visitor of the Frostburg Open each February, but Friday will denote the inaugural dual between the Blue Hose and the Bobcats.

- Breonnah Neal has served as Frostburg's head coach for the past two seasons, scoring an average of 33 points per game during her club's win streak. They also placed 4th out of 29 teams at the Wilkes-Barre Open back in November.

RANKINGS UPDATE

- Although Presbyterian was bested by their Southeast Region rival King in their most recent dual showing, they are still well represented in both the NWCA and Open Mat individual rankings.

- Below is a list of each PC wrestler that is nationally-ranked for their respective weight class. The first number represents the NWCA ranking, while the second number represents the Open Mat ranking.
