PC Heads to Midwest for NWCA National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The next 48 hours will serve as a critical timepoint for the sixth-ranked Presbyterian College women's wrestling team, returning to the NWCA National Duals tournament in Iowa where 12 of the nation's top 25 teams will be attending.

PC throws their name in a 16-team double-elimination bracket, announced as the #6 seed last week. They'll begin on Friday at 3:30 EST versus another Division I program, the Lindenwood Lions.

As long as the Blue Hose do not take two losses tomorrow, they will move on to the second day of the tournament. Should they defeat Lindenwood in what will be the second all-time meeting, PC will then face the winner of #3 seed Grand Valley State against Sioux Falls.

This is the fourth consecutive season that head coach Brian Vutianitis has sent the Scotsmen to the NWCA Nationals Duals. Presbyterian has an excellent reputation at this event, holding a 10-5 record overall (each of those 10 wins have occurred over top-20 opponents).

SCOUTING LINDENWOOD

- Currently in their fourth season as a Division I member and in the fifth season for head coach Frank Yattoni, the Lions do not have near the body of work that PC does (just four duals compared to Presby's 14).

- Despite their small portfolio, Lindenwood does have a ranked win over then-#20 Quincy University by a 43-12 differential. Both of their losses have come against McKendree, the current #2 team in America.

- Friday will be Lindenwood's first action of any kind in three-and-a-half weeks. They were last seen at the North Central Invitational back in mid-December, placing sixth in that particular tournament.

- PC and the Lions dueled each other in November 2023 at a neutral site (coincidentally, also in Iowa), with the Blue Hose prevailing 25-20. Then-freshmen Maddie Kubicki and Henlee Haynes helped seal the victory with back-to-back pins that were each shorter than 65 seconds.

NATIONAL DUAL VETERANS

- Fourteen wrestlers on Presbyterian's roster already have experience competing in the NWCA National Duals (not counting recently-graduated All-American Paige Wehrmeister).

- Last winter was PC's most successful stab in this tournament, going 4-1 over two days and capping off that stretch with a four-point triumph against then-#6 Colorado Mesa.

- The Blue Hose are 3-0 in the opening round of the NWCA National Duals, beating 12th-ranked Adrian College in 2023, ninth-ranked New Jersey City in 2024, and 17th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point last season.

- Neither Chloe Dearwester nor Carina Giangeruso lost a single match at this event last year, going 9-0 combined in the middle of their terrific freshman campaigns.

- Two-time All-American junior Maddie Kubicki will enter tomorrow's tourney with a seven-match winning streak in the NWCA National Duals, which dates back to January 2024. Additionally, Alyssa Mahan holds a 7-3 career record in this tournament.

LAST TIME OUT

- The Blue Hose had a sensational weekend to start the new calendar year in Alabama, dominating four straight foes in dual play before turning right around to win five individual championships at the Red Lady Open.

- Held at D-III Huntingdon College, Presbyterian surpassed the 40-point mark in each of their blowout wins over Schreiner, Randolph, Mount Olive, and Montreat. The combined margin in those four duals was 170-14.

- Coach Vutianitis' crew has won 12 times this season by an average of 33 points. They will touch down in Iowa with an eight-match dual winning streak, the longest in program history.

- Jenna Anderson (117), Kassey Daugherty (131), Zoe Griffith (145), and Grace Leota (180) each won their first tournament titles on Sunday, while 160-pounder Kaylie Hall achieved her second championship in a row. Those five wrestlers went 20-0 en route to the gold.
