CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Never one to disappoint in the highly-touted NWCA National Duals tournament, the sixth-seeded Presbyterian College women's wrestling team displayed mighty grit on Friday as they knocked off #23 Lindenwood and #5 King to avoid elimination after dropping the second dual of the evening to fourth-ranked Grand Valley State.
The Blue Hose have now advanced to the second day of this tournament in four consecutive years, overcoming Lindenwood 27-16, falling to GVSU 24-17, and ending with a comeback victory over their Southeast Region rivals in a 23-22 thriller.
Although they surpassed King in last season's Regional Championship bracket, PC had yet to defeat the Tornado in a dual setting prior to Friday. That changed in Iowa as the Scotsmen registered four straight mid-match technical falls to change the narrative.
PC is now 12-6 at the NWCA National Duals all-time. They'll have a chance to finish in 5
th place for the second straight year at this event tomorrow, going up against #7 Colorado Mesa at 11:30 AM for a regular-season rematch.
If the Blue Hose beat the Mavericks as they did in Las Vegas last month, they'll wrestle one more time at 2:30 against either Lindenwood (again) or Sacred Heart.
NOTABLES
- Presbyterian defeated seven nationally-ranked wrestlers throughout Friday's trifecta, including a win over #2 Aspen Blanko from Grand Valley State courtesy of
Alyssa Mahan.
- Speaking of Mahan, the junior from Delaware accomplished her 75
th career victory in the first dual against Lindenwood, achieving that milestone with an 89-second pin over another ranked adversary (#15 Kate Cooper).
- Perhaps no PC wrestler is on quite a current heater like sophomore
Kassey Daugherty, who was perfect once more in day one of the tourney with a couple of tech's and a 5-0 decision over #10 Hannah Palise of GVSU.
- With a 24-3 record this winter, Daugherty continues what is now a 19-match winning streak that began in Sin City prior to Christmas.
- The Blue Hose are no strangers to the NWCA National Duals, and look no further than junior
Maddie Kubicki for proof of that claim. Thanks to a pair of TF's that were a combined 22-0 margin, Kubicki has now won nine consecutive bouts at this tournament which dates back two whole years.
BREAKING THE KING CURSE
- PC faced little resistance in their first win of the day, grabbing a lead as large as 15 points against Lindenwood and improving to 4-0 all-time in the opening round of the NWCA National Duals.
- While Grand Valley State was able to end Presby's program-record nine-match dual winning streak, the blue and garnet would respond in due time with a major turnaround against King.
- Trailing by a 12-6 count and with little positivity outside of a
Chloe Dearwester fall that took 62 seconds to make her 15-1 this season, PC totally flipped the script with a 16-2 run to take control.
- Daugherty, Kubicki, freshman
Zoe Griffith, and
Carina Giangeruso notched four technical falls in quick order to reach a 22-14 advantage with only two matches left.
- Although King was able to win the penultimate match, the method was only a 9-2 standard decision which clinched the dual for the Blue Hose and sent the Tornado packing.
