CULLOWHEE, N.C.- The Presbyterian College volleyball team has now won at least a share of the last three tournaments in which it has participated, capturing a 30-25, 30-21, 30-26 victory over host Western Carolina. Sweeping victories over The Citadel, N.C. A&T and Western Carolina has also moved the consecutive games winning streak to a staggering 16 games. PC is currently 10-4 on the season.
A strong front row of Amanda Kettles and Lauren Mason, with 12 and 14 kills respectively, was too much for Western Carolina to handle. Combined with the five service aces of Ashley Dunlap, Rachel Lewis' 39 assists, and Elizabeth Heineman's 12 digs the Blue Hose were too much to handle.
Game three was a back-and-forth contest over the first nine points with each team grabbing a share of the lead, before the Blue Hose eventually grabbed the momentum. With Ashley Dunlap serving, PC rattled off seven straight points, assuming a 16-10 lead. With the shift of the game in favor of the Blue Hose, Lanchester and Heather Swain helped to solidify the victory down the stretch with a kills. Outscoring Western Carolina 21-17 from the 9-9 tie, PC extended the streak of games won to 16 with the 30-26 win.
PC came into the second game of the match with a fire and intensity, sensing that the Catamounts were on the rope, hitting kills and hustling for digs with tenacity. With the game knotted at 3-3 and Rachel Lewis serving,
Presbyterian gained a six point lead, including two kills by Kettles and three attack errors in that span. Leading 14-10 the PC service game again came into play, as freshman Elizabeth Heineman was responsible for a 24-11 cushion. Along with Heineman, Lanchester recorded three kills, providing PC with the largest lead of the game at 13.
The Blue Hose closed out the final six of the points by combining Mason and Lanchester kills with two attack errors for the 30-21 victory.
In the process of extending the consecutive games won streak to 14, PC pounced on the host Catamounts early on in the first game, leading by a game-high 17-10 margin.
Western Carolina responded to the challenge by putting together a 10-3 run of its own, tying the game at 20-20, only to be halted after a Chris Belshe timeout. Presbyterian came out of the timeout with regained focus winning 10 of the next 15 points for both teams.
The Blue Hose front of Kettles (two kills), McKee (one kill) and Justine Lanchester's two kills and two service aces forged the PC 30-25 win.
