CLINTON, S.C.?The Presbyterian College volleyball team defeated conference foe Radford three sets to one on “Senior Night” at the Templeton Center. Led by solid defense, PC downed the Highlanders 25-21, 25-19, 17-25, 25-23.
Defensively PC racked up 87 digs in the four set match, with Ashley Dunlap (Greenville, S.C./Greenville) and Carolyn Fabros (Huntley, Ill./Huntley) both setting individual career single-match records. Dunlap collected 23 digs and Fabros recorded 15 digs to help the Blue Hose in the win. As a team PC also had nine blocks, and Amanda Kettles (Canton, Ga./Cherokee) led with two solo rejections.
Senior Rachel Lewis (Bloomington, Ill./Tri-Valley) tallied 40 assists, bringing her career assist record to 5237. Kettles led the offensive with 16 kills, while Kelsey McKee (Greenville, S.C./Eastside) and Lisa Shelley (Columbia, S.C./Blythewood) each chipped in 13 kills.
The Blue Hose took a 15-14 advantage in the first set off of a kill by senior Heather Swain (Woodruff, S.C./Southside Christian) to take their first lead of the set. After a kill from McKee to put PC up 18-17, the Blue Hose would outscore 7-4 Radford to take the first set 25-21.
After a four point run behind the serving of Dunlap early in the second set to give PC a 6-5 advantage, the Blue Hose would record two straight blocks and a kill to go up 10-5. The Highlanders would battle back to close the gap to as close as one point at 15-14, but with help from a Kettles kill and a service ace from senior Amanda Davis (Tallahassee, Fl./Leon) PC would take a 19-15 lead and never looked back on the way to a 25-19 set two victory.
Coming out of the break Radford battled the Blue Hose, taking a 16-12 lead before PC was able to cut it down to 16-14 behind the serving of Dunlap. The Highlanders, however, were able to withstand the push by PC and earned a 25-17 win in set three.
Leading two sets to one, PC went down by as much as three points early in the set before back-to-back kills by Shelley gave the Blue Hose a 13-11 lead. After trading points and fighting through tough rallies on both sides of the net, PC took a three point advantage off of a service ace by Kettles. Radford would fight back and took a one point lead, but a block by senior Justine Lanchester (Downs, Ill./Tri-Valley) would tie the score at 23-23. Two kills by the Blue Hose would win the set and the match 25-23.
Guided by their four seniors, the Blue Hose advance to 5-7 in Big South action and improve to 9-17 overall on the season with the win.
Radford (9-16, 4-10 BSC) was led by Megan McWhorter's 11 kills, and Kiley Kent's 38 assists. Katelyn Meeks recorded 37 digs for the Highlanders in the loss.
The Blue Hose return to action at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 for a conference match against league-leading Liberty.
