CONWAY, S.C. ? Presbyterian College fell 13-2 to Ball State on Sunday morning in its final game of the Centex Homes Invitational.
The loss came just one day after the Blue Hose had their scheduled first game against the Cardinals cancelled on Saturday evening due to inclement weather. The game with Ball State was cancelled in the fourth inning with the Blue Hose clinging to a 4-0 lead.
Sunday's 13-2 loss to Ball State dropped PC to 5-9 on the year, while Ball State moved back to .500 at 8-8 with the win.
Nate Horton (Spartanburg, S.C.) led the Blue Hose at the plate in the loss to Ball State on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with one run scored. He was the only Blue Hose player to record multiple hits in the game.
PC had two players record doubles in the game. Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Jared Combs (Pooler, Ga.) both had one double each.
In total, PC had seven hits in the contest, while Ball State had 13 in the game.
Designated hitter Nate Fields led Ball State in the win, going 3-for-5 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Fields hit one of two home runs for Ball State in the contest.
Ball State catcher Zach Dygert also had a home run for the Cardinals. He was 2-for-3 from the plate in the game with four RBIs and two runs scored.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the contest by scoring five in the top of the second. PC scored one in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 5-1, but Ball State secured two more in the top of the third to take a 7-1 lead.
PC scored its final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning before Ball State scored six more throughout the rest of the game to take the 13-2 win.
PC's first run in the game came in the bottom of the second when Combs scored an unearned run on an error by the Ball State second baseman. Combs had doubled to right center to get on base.
The Blue Hose scored their final run in the bottom of the third when Horton, who had singled to first base to start the frame, found his way home on a dropped fly ball by the Ball State rightfielder.
The Blue Hose next return home for the first time since March 2 for two games against the Ivy League's Yale at the PC Baseball Complex. The two teams will play the first game of the two-game series at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18 and then will finish the series with a 2 p.m. game on Wednesday, March 19.
