CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College baseball broke an 11-11 tie by scoring five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to emerge with a 16-11 win over Yale University on Thursday afternoon at the PC Baseball Complex.
Eight of nine batters in the PC lineup had multiple hits in the contest. The Blue Hose had four extra-base hits in the game with three doubles and one triple.
The two teams overall combined for 27 runs and 34 hits in the contest. PC out-hit Yale 18-16 in the game to improve to 5-4 on the year in games in which they have out-hit their opponent.
With the victory PC now stands at 6-11 overall, while the Bulldogs stumbled to 5-11 on the season with the loss. The Blue Hose snapped a five-game losing streak in the win over the Ivy League program.
Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) led the top half of the PC lineup with a 3-for-5, two RBI, two-run performance against the Bulldogs. Robbie Anders (Greenville, S.C.) was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored for PC. He had one double in the game.
Nate Horton (Spartanburg, S.C.) continued his torrid play for the Blue Hose in the game, going 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs at cleanup for the Blue Hose. Horton now has a team-best eight multiple hit contests in 2008.
With one out and the game tied 11-11 in the home half of the eighth inning, PC's Jared Combs (Pooler, Ga.) lifted a single into right field that put Steven Henry (Hoschton, Ga.) into scoring position. Zac Rhinesmith (Acworth, Ga.) followed with a single to center field, reaching second on an error. The play scored Combs and Henry.
After a Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) walk, Anders doubled to right field to plate Rhinesmith and put runners on the corners. Craven continued to tack on runs for PC in the frame, singling to left field to score Anders and Lyda for the final two runs of the inning.
In his first appearance on the hill in 2008, PC's Steven Henry (1-0) pitched PC's final two innings in the victory, allowing just one hit and one walk. Henry started the game as the Blue Hose first baseman. He was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and one run scored from the dish.
Chris Walsh (0-2) took the loss for Yale with PC gathering five earned runs on four hits on the Yale reliever.
PC next travels to Charleston Southern for a three-game series against the Buccaneers. The first game of the series with PC's future Big South Conference foe will be played at 2 p.m. on Friday, March 21.
The two teams will then play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
