CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Cory Lyda finished with two hits and two runs scored in Presbyterian College's 11-4 loss to Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon.
Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) overall was 2-for-5 with one RBI. One of his two hits was a double.
He was one of two Blue Hose with multiple hits in the contest. PC's Jesse Harmon (Newberry, S.C.) was 2-for-4 with one run.
Charleston Southern designated hitter Derek Smith led the Buccaneers at the plate. He was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs. One of his three hits was a home run.
He was one of two Bucs in the contest to conclude their efforts with three RBIs against PC. Steve Antolik only had one hit in the game for CSU, but his one hit was a three-run home run to left centerfield.
The Blue Hose arrived on the scoreboard first in the game with a run in the top of the first inning. Lyda led off the inning by reaching on an error by the CSU second baseman. He was then advanced to third by a single by Robbie Anders (Greenville, S.C.).
Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) then sacrificed to the centerfielder to bring in Lyda and give PC a 1-0 lead. The lead would not last long as CSU would score 10 runs over the next five innings to take a 10-1 lead.
The Blue Hose would snap the 10-0 run by CSU in the top of the seventh inning with two runs.
Lyda brought home the first run of the seventh inning for PC when he singled to left field to bring in Harmon, who had started the inning with a single through the left side.
Zac Rhinesmith (Acworth, Ga.) scored next to net PC's second run of the inning. Rhinesmith had reached base on a fielder's choice and then had been brought to the dish with an error by the CSU shortstop with Anders at the plate.
After CSU scored one more in the bottom of the same frame to set the score at 11-3 in its favor, PC acquired the final run of the game and set the final score at 11-4 in the top of the ninth when Nate Horton (Spartanburg, S.C.) singled to right field to bring in Lyda.
CSU's Andrew White (3-1) picked up the win from the mound for the Bucs, pitching seven innings and striking out five Blue Hose. PC's Mitchell Odom (1-2) struck out three CSU batters in the loss.
PC (6-11) concludes its series with CSU (7-12) with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 22. First pitch in game one is slated for 11 a.m.
