CSU Takes Two From PC On Saturday

CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College dropped both games of its doubleheader with Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hose narrowly fell 6-5 in game one before CSU took a 12-0 victory in game two.

 

The Blue Hose are now 6-13 on the year. CSU improves to 9-12 on the season with the two wins over PC on Saturday.

 

With Presbyterian College leading the Buccaneers 5-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning in the first game, CSU scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to pick up a 6-5 victory over the Blue Hose.

 

The score 5-5, CSU's Mark Perry hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Brantley Meier and give CSU the one-run win.

 

The two teams combined for 25 hits in the contest with PC outhitting CSU 15-10. PC had six players finish with multiple hits. Preston Simpson (Lancaster, S.C.) and Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) led the Blue Hose with three hits each. Both were 3-for-5 in the game. Lyda scored two runs in the game.

 

The Blue Hose opened game one with a bunt single by Lyda, who then moved himself into scoring position on a wild pitch by Charleston Southern starting pitcher Cody Higgins.

 

Robbie Anders (Greenville, S.C.) then continued PC's early efforts to manufacture runs through small ball when he picked up PC's second bunt single of the inning and moved Lyda over to third base.

 

Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) then singled through the left side to bring home Lyda and give PC an early 1-0 lead. A few batters later with the bases jammed PC added its second run of the inning when Higgins walked Jared Combs (Pooler, Ga.) to bring home Anders and give PC a 2-0 lead.

 

After PC allowed the Buccaneers to take a 3-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the second inning the Blue Hose squared the contest at 3-3 with a run in the top of the third inning.

 

Steven Henry (Hoschton, Ga.) picked up the RBI on the run when he singled to center field to bring in Craven, who had opened the inning by being hit by a Higgins pitch.

 

The Blue Hose fell behind 4-3 in the bottom of the fourth inning with another CSU run, but scored two more in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-4 lead.

 

Combs picked up the go-ahead run for PC in the top of the seventh when he sacrificed to left field to bring home Henry, who had tripled to center field to begin the inning for the Blue Hose.

 

Zac Rhinesmith (Acworth, Ga.) led the Blue Hose in the second game loss to Charleston Southern, collecting a team-best two hits. Rhinesmith was 2-for-3 overall in the second game.

 

The Blue Hose next travel just up the road to Spartanburg, S.C. to take on Wofford at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 25. The game will be broadcast by the Presbyterian College Sports Network with the Voice of the Blue Hose John Avery calling all the action.
