CLINTON, S.C. ? Presbyterian College completed its final home game of the 2008 season with a ninth inning rally that fell short to Georgia State by an 8-7 final at the PC Baseball Complex. Kyle Craven (Savannah, Ga.) led the way for the Blue Hose by hitting 3-for-5 from the dish, scoring one run.
Jesse Harmon (Newberry, S.C.) was one of four players in the PC lineup to collect an RBI, hitting 1-for-3 with three RBIs against the Panthers. Harmon smacked his third home run of the season in a five-run first inning that put PC ahead early.
Drew Wingo (Simpsonville, S.C.) hit 1-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored against Georgia State, while PC senior Casey Carlson (Lexington, S.C.) hit 1-for-4 including a single into right field for the final hit of the game to score Wingo from third. Nate Horton (Spartanburg, S.C.) rounded out the PC lineup with a 1-for-4, one RBI afternoon.
After allowing two runs in the top of the first, Cory Lyda (Simpsonville, S.C.) and Craven led off with back-to-back singles to open the home half of the inning. Carlson moved the runners up with a grounder to the shortstop before Horton singled to right field to tie the game at 2-2. Following a hard single to third base by Zac Rhinesmith (Acworth, Ga.), Horton sent a towering home run over the left centerfield wall for the 5-2 PC lead.
Georgia State's Bennett Logan connected on a two-run home run in the third inning to cut the lead to 5-4.
The Blue Hose got an insurance run in the sixth inning on a Wingo walk that would score Harmon from third on an errant throw.
Georgia State rallied in the seventh to make the lead 6-5 in favor of PC by taking advantage of a wild pitch to plate Nick Hogan.
The momentum shifted in the top of the eighth inning for Georgia State with the game-tying single by Marc Mimeault to right field that scored Daniel Merck. Hogan followed with a single that put runners on the corners. Two batters later Chase Childers sent a single through the left side of the infield past a diving Anders for the 8-6 GSU lead.
PC answered in the ninth inning with consecutive singles by Wingo and Anders, who would eventually reach third on a wild pitch, with Carlson at the plate. Carlson lifted a single into right field to score Wingo from third, however Anders was thrown out sliding into home on the play.
The Blue Hose next take on future Big South Conference foe Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C. on Wednesday, May 14 before closing out their 2008 season with a three-game set with SoCon power The Citadel at Riley Park in Charleston, S.C.
The first game of the three-game series is at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 15. The Blue Hose and Bulldogs will then face off at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16 before concluding the three-game series with a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday, May 17.
